$1 Bread Loaf

Made this today ,  based on the 'no fuss' roll recipe.  This is just the cost of the flour.   I didn't count the electricity as I cooked it at the same time as I roasted a chicken.  It is 2/3 white,  and 1/3 home ground wholemeal flour.

i wouldn't be calling that a $1 loaf - it looks like an artisan loaf. Can we see what the crumb looks like? Thumbs up (what we need is the some thing as on facebook - a like" button).

Can you tell me how you made the top of the loaf look like that?

I made rolls last night using this same recipe and hubby was very impressed with our salad rolls for lunch today!

Looking forward to making this into a loaf.

Bkmundt, to make the top crust look like this,  score the top with a very sharp knife or blade to about 1cm. Deep when the loaf is about 3/4 way through 2 rise.  brush with egg wash,  that has been  beaten with a little water.  Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Chelsea, the tin is 25 x16 cm., and slopes slightly in to the base.   I paid $2.50 for it at Aldi, on their bargain table.
thermoheaven the crumb was good for sandwiches when fresh,  but even better for toast.  next tome I will post a photo before it gets eaten.

Thanks Chookie.  I am in the market for a smaller bread tin and that one looks a lovely size for a 500g flour loaf. I think I will need to buy online as our kitchen stores are a bit limited where I live.  Does anyone have a good online store for bread tins?  :)

Ive just joined and i want to bake a simple bread. The first thing i looked up was this ($1.00 bread Loaf) and Ive looked up the earlier posts (plain white rolls). I'm a guy who wants to use his wife's new thermomix and rarely done any cooking but will now (if I'm allowed :-)  ).
Just one qestion:  What is "bread improver" & where do I get it.

Hi pdalliston, welcome to the forum.  If you can produce a great loaf of bread for DW, I'm sure she will let you use the machine as much as you want  :D   Here's a description of bread improver, it comes in a small box and can be found near the flours and dry yeast products at any supermarket.  I use 2 level teaspoons per batch and it greatly improved my bread making success. Others don't use it at all and some people add some absorbic acid which apparently does the same thing.

"What is a bread improver?
Bread improver is a baking product, which will help improve the texture and the volume of bread. It is often used when making bread from scratch ie: when not using a bread mix.

If the centre of your loaf is collapsing, it is more than likely that a bread improver may need to be added.

Bread improver has a flour like texture and contains ingredients such as ascorbic acid, soy flour and en2ymes (amylase). It can be purchased from selected supermarkets or Health Food stores. Follow manufacturer's instructions on the quantity to be used."

You can get a natural bread improver as well. I use an all about bread brand one but as JD says you can buy regular bread improver in the supermarket.

pdalliston,  if you use Laucke flour ,  bread mix, from the supermarket you don't need the improver.  Good luck,  if you want any help ,  just ask.

Thermoheaven this is the cut version of the $1 bread.
