Where's the Wallaby?!
« on: February 11, 2011, 01:30:57 am »
Has anyone else found that Coles are no longer stocking Wallaby Bakers Flour?

Both my GL & I have had problems at our separate supermarkets.

What's the alternative? I know someone out there will have a suggestion  ;)

Thanks,
Karen

I have noticed a few months ago that Coles didn't have Wallaby flour, and then it magically appeared again.

Maybe they have limited stock coming in?

I know the mill where I get my flour (Kialla) was flooded last month so maybe Laucke (wallaby brand) had the same problem. This is they're website if you want to ask them. I have asked them questions before about they're flour and they have got back to fairly quickly.  ;) http://www.laucke.com.au/flours.html

Aaaaah Nay-nay, yep this may be the case. I'll make an enquiry. Thanks both of you for your replies - I knew I'd get help here :)

I just checked at coles online and our local store still stocks it.  I buy 10kg bags of organic laucke bread flour from my local health food store for $30.  It is a little more expensive but is an option until Wallaby becomes available.  :)

I really like Lighthouse strong bread flour - it makes beautiful foccaicia and pizza bases.

Could just buy Laucke Bread Mix,  $20 for 10k.  Don't add sugar, salt or improver.  Yeast is included.

Chookie do you use that for your sourdough?

Our Coles is out of Wallaby now too.  Has anyone tried Defiance 5kg bread flour?  I am guessing it must be similar to Wallaby, but bleached.

Yes Cookie,  I use this for my sourdough and also to feed my starter.  Being basically lazy,  I then don't have to add the sug. salt and improver.  I used to use Defiance but feel the Laucke is better Chelsea.  Better flavor and texture.

I used to use Defiance before Wallaby became available - same results as far as I am concerned.  I see Laucke's Wallaby flour now has folate added to it like the rest of them. I thought they were not going to.

Yep - I'm using this atm because there was no other choice. Everything working out fine. Hoping my organic flour will be back in this week.

Yes they were facing BIG fines from the government if they didn't conform but I think they are still actively fighting against it.

what was wrong with the folate being added? I remember the topic a few months ago, but have forgotten why there is an issue with its addition.

that's the topic - in short it is from a synthetic source and many experts predict it to be a cancer causing product.   :-\
