Oreos: Made in China!

This, to me, is a bit of a worry...

I was just going to make those little cake pops and was idly nibbling an Oreo and reading the packet. I was actually checking to see what sort of colour made them so dark. According to the packet, there's no colouring...sorry, don't believe that.

Then, I read further and found that they're made in China by Nabisco Food (Suzhou) Co. Since the melamine in milk powder scare, I never buy any foods from China.

So, I guess I'm going to have to find a substitute to make the cake pops!!

perhaps the mint slice version? I don't buy biscuits so wouldn't know if they are any better though

Certainly a little worrying MJ, next time I'm shopping I will have a look at a packet to see where the Oreo's that are sold in the UK are made.

or mj make your own..and im sure you can find unusual cookie or bikky cutters or just have them plain..anyway here are a couple sites i found that makes homemade and im sure there are many others. and im sure very easy to convert if ou wanted to do them thx!

Yes, I have never made cake pops because I don't like the usual ingredients in them... unless they're made like Elana from Elana's Pantry makes hers! (Gluten free, naturally sweetened - made with almond flour cake.)  Very pretty, but I'm always in a hurry, so haven't bothered yet!!

not just for the cake tops but if you make them then you know next time you can also use a few for the cake tops..just a flying thought and yes probably too much hassle just for what you wanted them for!  im not a lover of oreos or alot of bought biscuits personally and much prefer homemade but might give the recipe a try...they look yummy

For those Tim Tam addicts in Australia, have you noticed that sometimes they seem smaller, thinner or not so tasty - SOME Tim Tams are made in Indonesia - I am told you really have to read the small print on the packaging first to ascertain whether they are of Australian or Indonesian origin.

I don't use Oreos or other commercial cookies because they have ingredients that I don't want to consume.

I'm pretty sure the black cocoa is available in Australia as one of the members on another forum who lives in Sydney has made these cookies with it.

No - i wouldn't bother going to the trouble of actually making up the bikies just to crush but you can make the mix up and press mix flat into the bottom of tin then crumble that up without forming into bikies. I do this when I'm making a recipe that calls for a bikie base as I too won't buy the nasties in the supermarket isle.

Nay, that's a great idea for a biscuit base. Wouldn't work for cake pops, though as they're not cooked.

The Oreo Cookie recipe sounds really yummy. Think I'll be making them, but not to crush up!!

Oh gosh. I'm glad that I sent the oreo cookie pops to work with DD. I'm quite fanatical about food from China. I won't buy it and will go without.

I finally got to open the site you linked to, Andie. I use Dutch Cocoa in all my cooking, quite my accident as the Woolworths Home Brand is Dutch Cocoa. It's the darkest, most delicious cocoa you've ever seen. I don't buy Cadbury's anything and that's all that was available, so I bought it and am thrilled that I did!
