Ministry of food
« on: March 20, 2011, 09:15:41 am »
Hey all, I live in Ipswich and we are lucky to have jamie's ministry of food setting up shop here.  I am so excited as so many of the women I work with don't know how to cook and have never been part of a home where food is prepared.  I have volunteered to be part of the effort do any of you have any experiences with the organization.  I feel so blessed to have been raised in a multi generational home with a Greek grandmother who was always cooking and baking! Sadly my daughter has no interest yet but I live in hope as she is only 15

How lucky you are to be involved in this! I do so admire Jamie for his dedication to teaching people about good nutrition.
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Oh I heard about that over here and also what he was doing in the states and that he was gettting a fair bit of flack about it but think its a good idea teaching schools, families and other to get back to the basics and how easy it is to cook healthy homemade meals is great..there are too many people these days living on crappy foods and/or have no idea how to cook...think its great that you are part of it...there are other chefs around the world doing similar things!

Yes, he got a lot of flack about it.  But then, it seems like the media (and some people) are just looking for things to criticise and be negative about.  I think what he's doing is great, and all credit to him.  Especially for not giving up in the face of all the attack.

It's brilliant that you're involved.  Let us know how it all goes.
As my picture shows, I've suddenly become younger :-)  DD was of the opinion that her picture should be here, not mine!

I was horrified to see how people ate in those shows and didn't think that it would be anywhere like that here! Hope it will be a fantastic opportunity for you guys down in Ipswich and something positive to look forward to after all the woes that came with the floods.  :)

Do you know what the general feeling of the people in Ipswich is? I often wonder how the poeple of the town feel. Do they feel they are being made out to be overweight etc?

Wish he would come to Bendigo in Victoria.  We have been identified as one of the worst postcodes in Victoia for Obesity, diabetes and cancer!  (and not surprisingly we have a very large number of fast food chains per capita) I love his work and message and would love the opportunity to be involved with sharing it.  How fantastic for you joynatalie to get involved.

It is hard to gauge mood at the moment most people are still pretty pre occupied with the flood.  Community workers are thrilled we filled a lecture hall during the introduction! We see some really overweight people with all the associated comorbidity stuff but worst of all are the really obese depressed kids.  We are lucky to have an really good mayor and a support from q health and the council.  we are waiting for the kitchen to open so I will keep you all updated.
