Steamed Roly Poly
« on: June 27, 2011, 06:15:49 am »
Steamed Roly Poly:
Serves 6:
Ingredients:
180g flour (½ plain and ½ self raising)
1 teaspoon salt
90g butter or suet if you wish
cold water

Preparation:
Put flours and butter into bowl. Speed 5, 10 seconds.
Add cold water and  :: until it comes together.
Roll out to approx 30cm x 35cm.
Spread with jam or whatever you like.Leave a border of about 2cm. (I used fruit mince as I had some left from Christmas.)
Roll up from short side, fold in side edges so that no mix fallls out.
Carefully lift onto glad bake. Fold glad bake over it leaving room for expansion. I actually put a fold in the top of mine like you do for steam puddings.
Put nearly 2 litres water into bowl.
Cook at varoma for about 1 hour.

Gee Cookie, I haven't had this since I was little girl.  Mum used to make this quite often though she used jam sprinkled with a few currants.

That was all we had too CP63. Homemade jam too. We would have loved some bopught jam as kids. I just used the fruit mince as I had it in the fridge.

Cookie, this looks great.   Thanks for converting and testing.  I bought a book while in London.   "Good Old Fashioned Puddings".  Will have to adapt to fit into Pudding Sleeve.   This book says about Spotted Dick......"Setting aside the double entendre.  the contentious word is thought to be a Huddersfield word for pudding".   Ha ,  how about that.!

Last night I made a steamed jam roly poly and thought I was converting a new recipe. Now I find that I had done it before. How dumb is that, no wonder it was so easy.
Here are the photos of last night's dessert. I used dried apricot jam (Tenina's recipe) in half and blueberry in the other half. We had it with custard with only 50g of sugar in it.

So did we, but my mum did use suet, I can still see her grating the big lump of fat LOL!

Great recipe cookie, will be making this one for sure.

I really like the taste of it with suet.

I might have to try a steamed apple pudding, I love those.

Cookie, looks great.  The Chocolate and Raspberry Pud that I posted was supposed to be a Rolly Poly ,  but i didn't trust my self to do this.  You are so clever ;D ;D ;D
