Self confessed takeaway addict :(
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:24:51 am »
Hi Everyone...

I am totally addicted to takeaway...mainly because I'm too overwhelmed (and lazy) to think of healthy choices at the drop of a hat.  I don't mean that we eat it every other night, but I'm always tempted with the ease of it and the guarantee that it will get eaten. (BAD!)

I know you have all given suggestions in the past, but I'd like to know what your top 5 easiest/quickest and yummiest (thru the eyes of three kids) meals are.

I find if any recipes need lots of weird or uncommon ingredients, then they don't become regulars.  So any recipes that are pretty basic would be best :)

Thanking you all in advance x

What foods are a guaranteed eat in your house? (you say takeaway but not what sort, if your kids hate Asian then a stir fry whilst quick and easy isn't going to be the best meal).

I posted an alternatives to take-aways list on my blog Renlor. They are mainly vego and cupboard love meals for when I forget to thaw meat.  :)

Hi Renlor,

I have a few meals that I keep for those times when I really don't feel like cooking and are quick.

1. Bangers and mash
2. Macaroni Steam (Thermomixer)
3. Quiche (achookwoman)
4. Pumpkin soup

There really are too many too list. All of these can be found on this forum but can't remember how to add the links and about to cook dinner. Probably the best thing that I do is that whenever I cook a recipe I make sure that I make the full bowl of food. That way I pack any leftovers straight in containers and freeze. When I don't feel like cooking everyone gets to go to the freezer and pick a meal. That way it's a bit like takeaway and everyone gets what they want.

I make chilli beef and beans and bolognaise sauce and freeze them for those times I really can't bring myself to make dinner.

We also have Salmon Pasta bake or risotto on these occasions.  My boys 14 and 12 make the salmon bake and I do the risotto if they're on the menu.

Thanks heaps for all the awesome suggestions!!

My kids are pretty standard with their takeaway...maccas etc...no stir frys.  But having said that, I've been meaning to make the honey soy chicken.  I've made the bangers and mash...that was yummo, but hubby whinged that the sausages weren't "crispy"!! He'll just have to deal with it hehehe.  I've bought some butternut pumpkin for pumpkin soup...my eldest son loves it.  I would like to make more risotto, but have only made it once and found it very bland.  I used to make macaroni beef for the kids years ago (out of symply too good to be true) but haven't made it for donkeys...should be heaps easier now that I can whip up a nice white sauce in thermie.

I made sausage casserole with dumplings tonight for the first time....it was a big success...even though the youngest only wanted to eat the sausage and dumplings and avoid the sauce with all the goodies in it.

Thanks once again...I'll be printing these posts out and putting it in my little to do thermie folder.

Cheers,

Renae :) ;D

We find most risottos bland too.  Have you tried this one though? It is full of flavour and just delicious.  Check out my tweaks in the thread.  :)

There is a recipe in the EDC which is fantastic as an alternative to risotto and as easy and tasty as fast food. I Havent got the book with me but it's the apricot chicken with rice. Can't tell you how easy it is once you've made it once!

Renlor, take my advice, get a much larger folder for your to do recipes now, you'll be needing it very soon because you will start collecting recipes, ideas and tips at a fast rate of knots on this forum and you'll need all the space you can keep for storing them!

Renlor, here is a list of my favourite recipes so far from the forum. You will find once you get into TMXing, takeaway food loses its appeal (and taste).

I agree!

When you get used to eating good quality nutritious meals the crappy takeaway stuff just seems expensive and horrible.

Thanks guys...that is one HUGE list Creampuff hehe...I've attached it as a favourite.

I do have a decent size folder of "to-do" dishes that I've printed off this forum...just need to get my finger out of my butt and start using more of them.  :)
