I'm needing new pans, most of mine are scanpans which I will never buy again, even my Bessemer ware didn't stand up to DS #1 when he house sat a year ago. We don't know what he did to them, but they have never been the same again.
GHM how rude of that sales lady, hope you are going to complain about how condescending she was to you.
I child-proofed my house, but they still get in!

I bought stainless steel saucepans, with a copper base covered by stainless steel in 1977 when we returned from our first round of country service. I loved them then and I still love them. I bought a Baccarat frying pan  stainless steel about 10 years ago and it is still going strong. Non stick never lasts in this house as DH scrubs them too hard.

Years ago we were camped at Shell Beach near Shark Bay and some young guys had caught a fish and had nothing to cook it in. We lent them our non stick frying pan. ( a cheap one, but new). They cooked the fish over an open fire and were so proud of themselves when they returned the pan next morning, almost sparkling. The non stick must have been hard to get off. They didn't speak English very well so what could we say except be how pleased at the way they had cleaned it up for us.

;D ;D  Bless their hearts!!  This story reminds me of one I heard years ago about a young Western woman about to be married to a Chinese gentleman.  So eager was she to impress her future inlaws that she got to work in the kitchen and scrubbed (and scrubbed) all the woks until they glistened . . . .all those years of building up the breath of the wok gone in a day . . . . your heart just had to go out to her .!!

Ooh! Me too Cookie! We bought a set of stainless steel saucepans when we got married and even though I've done my utmost to destroy them over the years (eg sterilizing baby's dummies and boiling them dry, melting the plastic to a black mess!) they've survived and still look and cook really well. I think they were Krona - long gone alas. They have nifty little steam vents which I find useful. A few years ago I added a couple of RACO pans with the same feature, but I can't seem to find them these days. As for non-stick cookware I quite like Swiss Diamond - especially when on sale!

Buy them Amanda.

List of reasons to justify purchase.

Don't they look handsome!
My old knives are 14 years old.  They are still perfect (Wusthof) but I could give them to my daughter couldn't I?
Sabatier are the bees knees in knives and are historically significant too.
I'd never have to buy any others in my life.  (Think I used that one when I bought the Wusthof's.)
It's not like I wouldn't get the use out of them.
They'll never be this price again.

Sorry GP, forgot to update. Yes one package has arrived and have confirmed the other two were posted the day after the fire. Phew! All good here.

That's great to hear Kimmy, and the timing of your other two was perfect also :)
