« on: September 02, 2011, 10:46:39 am »
need your help...JD your searching brain and fingers too lol

ages ago on I dont know on what link there was somebody Im thinking brazen or ILb??? put up a link to a technique for icing to make figures flat on the cake in detail like spiderman or winnie the pooh etc...you used a black and white copy and traced it on baking paper put it in the freezer or something but i cant remember exactly to get hte different layers right between out line etc...so if somebody can remember where it is i would be grateful as i am wanting to do TODAY just a round cake and put a spiderman iced onto it with all different cupcakes perhaps iwth mini spiders on them in either icing or chocolate if i get time..

hopefully somebody will remember what im talking about... ??? ???

Frozzie, not sure if this is it. Scroll down to JD's post on the 30 May. I was thinking about wanting flat icing. Nah, actually don't think it is the answer but perhaps in this topic anyway?

its 2am here and it didnt work so did a quick design of spidermen head on cake and choc sprinkles all around...disappointed..did a great outline etc but it wasnt buttercream instead a writing icing pen in black as thats all i had in black...learnt my lesson...next time order special black dye and the writing pen icing does not freeze  :(  so annoyed that i cant do the cake i had planned but good news is that the outline looked great just pity it wasnt butter icing..  off to bed peeps...longgggggg day ahead tomorrow!

ok slowly getting on top of things now that the kidlets are back at school...anyway thought I would report back on the frozen buttercream designs...it was a bit of a disaster...normally you need to leave it for 45 mins which I did but didnt have a minute longer so in future not only would I leave it longer in the freezer but also use a different recipe than a basic butter cream...anyhoo below is a photo of my efforts and as you can see some bits are missing.. (wasnt frozen enough) but at least you can still tell what it was supposed to be lol and luckily it was just for family...definately not my year for birthday cakes....im going to put it down to just being generally worn out..anyway as promised...need to share in the disasters as well as the successes huh lovelies!!!  Oh forgot to also mention that I had trouble with the butter cream getting too liquid and having to put it in the fridge a few times which is why the consistency is a little off ....as I said not my birthday cake year but the kids were happy and to a mum thats all that matters when everything else is chaotic!

i would also suggest having a good practice run before the cake as using a size 2 tip to do fiddly outline isnt as easy at it looks but gets easier after 4 or 5 runs but you need time and patience and I also started too small...would be much easier on a normal size cake...cupcakes is probably not the best to start on haha!! live and learn!

I've got to tell you, Frozzie, compared to anything I might attempt, yours are outstanding.  I don't have an artistic bone in my body - I couldn't even keep within the lines in my colouring in books when I was a kid so I wouldn't even think of attempting anything as complicated as this!  All you need is a bit more practice and time, but you now know that you can't rush this job so the next ones will be so much better!  I think you have done really well considering this was your first time and the pressure you were under initially - keep at it and you'll be so proud when everything falls into place and they work out for you.
