Piping on the side of a cake
« on: September 29, 2011, 07:03:18 am »
I borrowed a large cup cake tin from a friend. Should have returned it then & there.

I wanted to make a nice cake for the student teacher in ds class, ds really likes her, so to say thank you i thought this cake would be nice.

1. Cooked at different rates, the top 1/2 was cooked and the large base wasn't! Should have thought oh well freeze it and serve with ice cream for 1 month.
2. Botton cake came out of tin OK, top cake slightly burnt and broke in 2.
3. Stuck together OK with butter icing
4 looks like the leaning tower of pisa
5. Piping on top great, OK we can fix this, should have ad a stiff drink at this stage, but no continued on
6. Piping on side kept falling off, wouldn't stay on!!!!!
7. OK we will just smooth icing round, wrong
8. Run out of icing, used 550g butter already, now have to make yellow the same
9.icing good, OK Leys Make it look like a children's ice cream,
10 find 100's & 1000's stick them on the base and then silver balls at the top. Of course not enough 100's etc so very patchy.

Now looks like something ds has made.

Not happy, cant ditch it as a waste, will taste Good but looks amateurish.

Anyway How do you pipe on the side. ??? ???

Hally, a new thread has just been started today for failures - send me a picture and I'll put it in there for you  ;D

Sometimes you just have to stay out of the kitchen.  At least your KFC was a success today.

I bet it tastes nice, no matter what it looks like.

Hally,  get Crown Prince to add some smarties and tell her he helped you make it.  You really should get some Chooks.  They just love it when I have a disaster,  and it is returned in eggs. :-)) :-)) :-))

Hally, try warming up some jam, brush on then ice on top.  It should help it stick.
I wouldn't bother piping sides, just using a palette knife would be easier.
Pressing on sprinkles/coconut/chocolate shavings will also  hide the gaps too  ;)
Kids will love it regardless!

I must say, I hadn't bought that cupcake tin for the reasons that happened to you.
I had been caught before with some novelty tins, where cake capacity was smaller in areas, which makes for a P.I.T.A cake  :-))

Hally, it's not that bad - I like the idea that DS made it though.  Would he go along with the story though  :D :D
