Thanks everyone - your feedback has been great, and a couple of things I would never have  thought of.  :-* :-* :-*

(Actually JO the race doesn't interest me either. It's an annual event with my friends, and we always have a lot of laughs together. It's become a traditional get together)

CP I just realised I was answering last years posts where most weren't planning anything and I was agreeing.  :-[  Didn't even see your request for ideas for food until I've just read the whole thread.  I came across as trying to put a downer on it, I'm sorry.  That will teach me to be more observant!  :-\

CP for me I would buy some prawns. Make a sauce. Cook a couple of chooks  and  and two cases of champers. Defrost the rolls and the home made  butter. Ask someone else to buy a pav.

Dress down, chow  down and drink up. Perfect. Enlist someone to drive the drunks home .


Or hire a maxi taxi to an elegant venue and let someone else do the work.

Wish u could come Gretch cos you are easy! Everyone lives within about 3 mins drive and we have a bus stop right outside our house, but one nice hubby will come and drop everyone home. I've looked at some alternatives but it starts to get time consuming when I come up with an idea and then think about preparation and cooking time, as there is not much time on the day. Ideally things just need to be pulled out of the fridge and heated through. I haven't totally discounted your idea tho as it sounds right up my ally. Maybe easier to jump on a plane and go to uni's  :D I've seen a couple of good things in Nico's book "Cooking Passions"

I'll be working  ;D - but as it's not a PH here that's ok. 

The last 2 years I have arranged a sweep - everyone gets involved with the 20 Baht sweep and the 100 Baht sweep - all good fun.  We listen to the race on the TuneIn app on my iPad. 

Not sure about this year - have a GM visit so it might get in the way of the festivities.

Hey Gert - I'm approx 300kms north of Bangkok.  It about a 4 hour drive to BKK and 5 to 6 to Chiang Mai.  Most of my shopping is done locally and about an hour away in Phitsanulok - they have a great supermarket that sells lamb!!!

You can buy NZ lamb in BKK cheaper than you can buy  Aussie lamb  here. Funny the things you miss but in Thailand you can buy anything and everything.  Love all of Thailand and the people. I am sure your job there is challenging and rewarding.

Hey Gert - yes I stock up on lamb as often as I can.  I haven't priced it - well I attempt to - but I try and only shop every 4 to 6 weeks for the fridge so i have sort of got into the - well you have to get it now or wait until you want to drive this far to purchase it again.  So not really following a budget *grin*

Yes the people here are wonderful.  So very friendly and welcoming.  I have also discovered many of my work mates have a big love of sweet things.  I bring in cakes and scones - and everyone loves whipped cream or cream cheese frosting *grin*
