Question about beans in minestrone soup
«

I've had my thermomix for 3 days now
, and I finally went grocery shopping today so that I can play around a bit. I want to make the minestrone soup from the Everyday cookbook, but I bought dry beans (borlotti & cannelini) instead of canned ones. I know the beans have to be soaked and cooked before eating and there's instructions on the packet, but how far do I go before adding them to the soup? I guess what I am asking is how to turn dried beans into canned beans? Can I do it in the Thermomix? To make 400g of canned beans, what weight of dried beans do I use? And are the canned ones cooked already, or do they get cooked when they go into the soup?
Sorry about all the questions, I've never used these thingies (beans, peas, lentils) before!

Sorry I can't answer your question Melissa, I'm a newbie too - but I'm sure someone on here will get back to you. Like you I'm trying new things - I hardly recognised my shopping trolley the other day, flours, lentils, raw sugar, nuts, fresh beetroot and
no processed foods
. Felt a bit naked
Good luck with the minestrone, haven't tried that one yet but I'm looking forward to it...

Yeah, my shopping trolley was piled high today, with lots of new and different items. I read through my docket and only 2 items from my $250 worth of shopping had the little GST symbol next to them. 1 was apricot nectar (I guess cause it's only 35% juice?) and the other was some ritz dry biscuits. I was pretty amazed by that

Tinned beans are cooked and just need heating through, so I would soak and cook you dired beans before adding them to the soup. From memory I think you need a little more than half the cooked weight of dried beans, but I am not totally sure.

There is a chart in the Vegetarian Book with cooking times for pulses in the TM.For cannellini beans is says
Soak 2-3 hours then cook in the basket @90c/ speed2-3 for 40-45 minutes 180g yields 400g when cooked
Borlotti beans,soak overnight,then cook in basket @90c/ speed 2-3 for 40-45 minutes 160g yields 340g when cooked
If you are cooking a large amount of beans cook directly in the TM bowl @90c/
/speed1.
If cooking longer than 35 minutes, check water and add as required.

Thanks everyone! I ended up cooking the whole packet, which gave me 2 lots of 400g of beans. I used one for the soup and froze one for next time.
