Buying Avocados
«
on:
January 04, 2012, 08:19:10 pm »
I need some avocados, I have no luck buying these. I press the top for ripeness and choose one that is slightly soft.
99% of the time i cut it open and its brown inside.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hally, I usually press the top and if it has got some 'give' then that's a good sign. If it is noticeably soft then it's too ripe. Another tip I have read is that if the stub of the stalk comes out then that's another indication that it is ripe, so look for a stalk that comes away and if there is some give at the top then you
should
be right.

Hi Hally, I found
this
site which talks about the stalk as well. Never heard of it but will be giving it a go when I am next at the supermarket.

I never seem to be able to find a ripe enough one in the supermarket if I need it for that day so tend to buy then a couple of days in advance (if I think of it
). I don't know how many I have bought just in case and then ended up throwing them away because I have left them there too long and they are completely brown. To me it is the hardest vegie to buy.

I buy them rock hard one week, to use the following week. That way I have a constant supply and they aren't bruised and yukky (if I buy them ripe they are normally awful inside). I put them in the fruit bowl and check every day, once starting to soften I put them in the fridge (I buy several so tend to stagger when I put them in the fridge so that they aren't all ripe at the same time). I've heard that putting them in a brown paper bag helps them to ripen faster.

I think you have to have a ripe banana in the paper bag with the avocado to make it ripen faster - something about the gas the banana gives off speeds the ripening process.

Well bought one. None had a green knob, they were all brown.
I need more but so fed up throwing them away.
See how this one goes

yes a rip banana and a avocado in a brown paper bag will ripen faster.
Our tree is loaded, so we should have plenty in about 4-6 weeks.

Couldnt wait, cut it open, EXCITEMENT perfect, so then I had to make something, this is delish
Green Goddess Dip and DressingFrom San Francisco Entertains by the Junior League of San Francisco
Coverted in excitement
Ingredients 1 cup chopped avocado (about 1 avocado)
3 or 4 anchovy fillets, mashed or 1-1/2 to 2 teaspoons anchovy paste, i left these out
2-3 garlic cloves, minced
2 scallions, chopped
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon minced fresh tarragon leaves
1/4 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1--1/2 tablespoons lemon juiceExtra-virgin olive oil (for making dressing)
Combine the avocado, anchovies, garlic, scallions, basil, parsley, and tarragon in TM
.Add the Greek yogurt, white wine vinegar, and lemon juice. Process until smooth.
Serve with crudités as a dip or over steamed green vegetables. For dressing, add olive oil 1/4 cup at a time, processing constantly until the desired consistency is reached. Toss with salad greens.Makes 1-1/2 cups.

That makes my mouth water Hally. I've put a copy into Starters so that I and maybe others can find it easily. Thanks.

Its absolutely delish, i put it in under condiments as I turned mine into dressing. Picked a cucumber out the garden and scraped out TM instead of spatula, yum yum yum
