Sometimes you just can't imagine what something will taste like with unusual ingredients like this Spaghetti recipe of my mum's. The base is bacon, onion and capsicum, fried in a little oil and the sauce is chutney, tomato sauce and cheese. I've since modified it and thicken it with extra water and cornflour. It's amazingly delicious!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Thank you Helene and Gretchen. I just know this will be yummy. Like you Gretchen I often put vegemite into various things.

just dont tell them chdv  ;D

hah, this will be interesting to see who is home tomorrow night for dinner. Actually I had to ask my daughter to go pick up some Vegemite in from Orel Füssli /the English bookstore on the Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich, today. I just looked at the price 7.90 SFr for a 200 G jar! That's about $8.

She asked me why I needed the Vegemite, so I told her. The response was "oh, yuck no, please can't you make lamingtons, instead of Vegemite spaghetti for Australia Day"

I work with the motto, 'what they don't know won't hurt them.'

Last night a guest asked if there was cream cheese in the Swiss Icecream cake, I muttered something about cream and eggs and stuff. They enjoyed it. :-\

Well, I was game to try this one - it made a quick lunch and both DH and myself enjoyed it immensely.  Thanks Helene for the recipe and Gretchen for alerting us to it.  I'm sure kids would love this but why should they get all the good stuff  ;D

Great tip for lurkers Helene, fancy not being able to see all the lovely photos JulieO & Maddy post - mine are not in the same league as theirs but at least gives an idea of what the dish looks like.  Glad to have tried your recipe, you never know until you try these things and as far as a budget meal goes, this one fits the bill nicely.

I can't wait to try it JD.  It would be a great alternative to takeaway when I can't be bothered cooking.  :)

We ended up having it tonight too Cookie, although just the basic nigella version without the veg.  I just grated the parmesan and cooked the spaghetti in the TM and did the butter and vegemite in a mug in the microwave (shocking I know). It was super easy though and about all I could manage tonight. DH wasn't home but the kids and I loved it.  My youngest doesn't even like vegemite but he really enjoyed this.  I think this recipe will be handy down the track when I'm looking to fill hungry teenage tummies quickly. A very good find Helene!!!  ;D
