Selling food?
«
on:

I just wondered if anyone has any experience in selling food to local cafes, deli's or even butchers? Do you know what the legalities are (licence, liability etc)? I am thinking of home-made (TM obviously!) soups and take-away main meals etc. Thanks!

I would say you would have to have a commercial kitchen, and a license from the local council in your area.
Thats what we need, even if selling at a market.

A friend of mine cooks from home (cakes, biscuits, slices and muffins) she has a license from the local council and had to have her kitchen registered.
She also has to list ingredients and nutritional information on her products.
Hope that helps

In NSW the food authority website lists what you have to do
http://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au/
I had a look because I was thinking about selling cookies at local markets but there are very strict criteria ( ie something about children not having access to food prep areas - my kids are always in the kitchen!)

It is a big process now. I baked 10 cakes for our school fair recently and the packaging took me longer than the baking and decorating. I had to include ingredients, weight, storage instructions, name, address etc. It is a nightmare really! I wonder how much longer we will be able to continue cooking the cakes at home. All of the other fair items had to be made in the school commercial kitchen (sweets, scones etc).

Me too H
I love baking but don't eat biscuits or cakes, so I'm always looking for reasons to make things for friends

At our school we can;t bake at home and donate to the school tuckshop any more. All has to be made at the school premises.
It makes it very hard for working Mums, wanting to help.
