Uni - a picture is worth a thousand words . . . ;D ;D
-
Looks fabulous, Uni, well done - I'd eat that (if I wasn't a vegetarian!).
Although you have been struggling with roasts in the past, never forget, you are making so many things each and every day that most of us here on the forum simply couldn't, or can't, make, so don't knock yourself out just because you are having a bit of trouble with one type of meal. You're a great cook!!!

Yum, that looks so good. I am feeling a bit seedy, lying in bed trying to make myself get up and go to work and now all I want is a delicious hot roast chicken. When I was a little girl we all used to fight over the Parson's nose, and them I went to a friends house and they called it the pope's nose, and my mother explained in non catholic family's they call it the Pope's nose and in Catholic families they call it the Parson's nose. Because it is the bum - so an insult. I think she must have made that up. Has anyone ever heard it called the Pope's nose?
-
Looks great Uni, well worth the wait.
Never heard it calld the Popes Nose.

Absolutely true. In my house my father always called it the Pope's nose and ate it with gusto.

Here's (http://www.epicurious.com/tools/fooddictionary/entry?id=4055) the reason it is called the Pope's nose. Your Mum was right bickie.
-
this poor chook is starting to sound yuk
-
Who would have thought the humble roast chook would bring about so much debate :) :) We fight over the parsons nose in our house ;D

It gets cut off in my house before cooking & the jiblets too, they go. I have a nice neat perfect looking chicken, no extra body parts on mine.

I agree Gert giblet gravy is wonderful ;D
-
No. I just like eating the giblets as they are. Yum. My DH always pinches the Parson's nose before I have time to dish it out. He hates the giblets. We make a good pair!
I also know it as the Pope's nose, but usually call it the Parson,s nose.
-
Never heard it called the Pope's nose, but I love the parson's nose, I get it everytime cause I'm the one that takes it out of the oven, and I'm not good at sharing ;D ;D ;D

Of course :D :D :D As kids we would fight over getting the wishbone ;)
-
LOL I still fight over the wishbone! Heaven help anyone who tries to take me on!!! ;)
-
If ony there was room in my freezer, i woukd pack up parsons nose, jiblets & wishbone to you all. I might start doing the wishbone with the ds.
H :)
-
Another thing you can do it collect all the wishbones, hang them by some string, dip them in gold or silver paint, hang them to dry over a chopstick or broom handle and hang them on your Christmas tree..
I just save them now for a neighbour's GD who wishs her sister could walk, a lovely girl with Angelmans Syndrome.

Its so much fun Hally!
And it does sometimes work, because one time I wished for a pet parrot that could talk, and then next year my mum bought me a budgie and I taught it how to say hello. Well, I nearly did. I'm sure he wanted to... :-\
-
Amy, LOL
H :)
-

Yay uni.. Been absent of late but good to hear you conquered the roast chook...you should be proud.. Another one crossed off that list!
-
;D i was very proud kim ;D. roast lamb next week.....well maybe its very exspensive to stuff up :-))
how have you been kim? and i hope DH is on the mend
-
Think positive.. You got the chook right so next the lamb will be a success ..find a nice marinade and you will have no more fear of roast anything 😁 mmmm we do a spicy butterflied lamb marinade that is delish...
We are fine still alot going on hence the absence... At the end of the school year end of june we are going for a break in italy which will be nice.. Not far from pisa where dh stayed every summer for a number of years and where he still has family friends who still live there.. So we are all looking forward to a much needed break 😊
-
Take care Frozzie, we miss you
-
Sounds like it will be a great get away Frozzie. Definitely miss your presence on the forum lately. Take care :)
-
Frozzie, I was wondering where you had gone too.
Uni, roast lamb, yum, cut slits in the top & stuff garlic cloves in, use lemon juice & rosemary. Easy
H :)
-
Take care Frozzie. Enjoy your holiday.
Uni, I am doing lamb in the slow cooker today. It is always so moist and the meat just falls off the bone. I rub some garlic, mustard and herbs over it and cook on low for 8 hours. I never use my oven for roasts for I hate cleaning the oven LOL
-
Uni, DG is so right - Roast Lamb in the slow cooker always turns out well.
You don't get the shrinkage either and the added benefit of not having to clean the oven.
-
Must try that myself, I always use the weber for roasts - having said that, it is very rare that we have a lamb roast in this house, usually it's chicken or pork. Lamb is so darn expensive.
-
I do all my roasts (chicken, pork, beef & lamb) in the slow cooker. So much nicer.
-
Uni looking forward to the next successful roast photo...
Thanks guys.. Im around just not as much obviously with alot on and will reveal some big news soon ... You havent got rid of me just yet lol!!. We are currently in bretagne visiting my fil which is nice although strange.. 😊😊

DG do u use a rack inside of the slow cooker
-
No Uni. Just a little water in the bottom and in goes the meat.
My meat wouldn't fit in today so I am cooking it in the oven.
140 degrees for 3 hours in a baking dish covered with al foil. I will take the foil off and increase to 180 for another hour. Never cooked in the oven so I hope it turns out OK. It is pork BTW so I will also drizzle oil and salt over skin in the hope to get crackling. Fingers crossed or it will be baked beans for dinner tonight LOL.
-
should i brown the roast off 1st
-
I don't fundj.
-
I also hate cleaning the oven, so I cook all my roasts in an oven bag. They remain moist and brown. Following Judy's idea I have been also using the BBQ. It is like having a third oven.
-

I put a carrot and potato slices in the bottom of the slow cooker to make a trivet to put the roast on and then add about 3/4 cup of stock. It doesn't need much liquid as the meat gives off it's own juices.
-
thanks will try it next time, do you pour the stock over the meat ?
-
Yes and rub the roast with oil, seasonings and herbs.
-
I don't have a pc, I'm scared of them :-)) I also do my roasts in the weber after JD spoke about it ages ago.
-
Uni I would brown the lamb before going in the slow cooker
