I love checking out what bakerella does with their cake pops. Check out this site for the general gist and decoration inspiration.
http://www.bakerella.com/category/pops-bites/cake-balls/
I didn't like the idea of using cake mix so used the recipe from here instead.
http://www.bakerella.com/spiders-spiders-spiders/
Here is my converted recipe - it doesn't get much simpler.
150g chocolate
150g butter
320g sugar (I use rapadura)
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
200g self raising flour
Extra chocolate for coating
Decorations of choice.
Melt chocolate and butter at 50deg, speed 3-4, approx 3 mins.
Add sugar, eggs, vanilla and flour. Mix speed 3 until combined. If using rapadura, the mixture may seem gritty, but the final cooked result is beautifully smooth.
Spread brownie batter in lined pan and bake for about 30 mins or until done.
Let cool.
After brownies are cooled, trim edges. Cut into pieces slightly larger than desired ball size. Then roll each piece into a ball. Place in fridge for about 30 mins to firm up.
Melt extra chocolate for coating. Drop ball into chocolate. Cover it by spooning chocolate over the top, completely covering the brownie ball. I found the easiest way of fishing out chocolate coated balls was with a strong toothpick. Place on baking paper lined tray. Attach any decorations of choice. Refrigerate until set.
This was my first attempt at cake pops, so kept it very simple. I sprinkled mine with fairy dust, which is basically special sprinkles. Made a great "birthday cake" for Miss2 today, with candles in two brownie balls.
If you have a favourite brownie recipe, just use that. Needs to be very moist so you can squish them into balls. These days I'd use a different recipe to reduce the sugar. I'd probably be sneaky and use Zucchini Brownies...
-
Good work CB79 - great conversion - so simple as you said - no excuses with the TMX.
Could you use a small cake fork like for making lamingtons etc to dip in the chocolate ? or a wooden skewer ?
-
I hadn't heard of cake pops. They're cute.
-

Absolutely - something that leaves a small hole but can take the weight.
There's a trend for parents to provide individual cakes for birthdays at childcare centres etc so that the child only blows (and spits) on their cake, and doesn't share the love. So muffins are popular. I think this is a great alternative. And no knives for cutting etc.
-
Very wise childcare centres. It makes it so much easier. We used to try and carve up birthday cakes into 30-40 equal pieces.
-
How are they going to build up their immunity without being exposed to other kids' germs?? ;D ;D ;D
When I think back - yuck - maybe that's why I don't eat much cake ??
-
Blowing out candles is such a tradition, but something I have always hated having to eat something that someone else has blown all their germs over. In the case of some younger siblings also missing out, it can be blown over 2 or 3 more times until everyone is happy -- Yuk! Fortunately when it has been my birthday, the cake has been fine because I don't have germs ;)
-
I have seen cake pops before when a friend made them. They were cute and very tasty. I tried making them myself once from a cake failure (very crumbly) and didn't make it past rolling the cake balls lol.
This brownie recipe sounds nice, but I think that would be as far as I get again. :D
-
They look so lovely cathy!
Thank you for the recipe :-*
I will definitely try to make them next halloween if I can resist so long! :D
-

Thank you Cathy!
I absolutely adore Bakerella's blog!
I have pre-ordered her cake pop book coming out in September? I think.

Will definitely give this a whirl ;)
-
Maddy, look forward to seeing pictures of your creations.
-
I've seen these made with cake mixed with buttercream - seriouscakes (http://www.youtube.com/user/SeriousCakes#p/search/0/wD0Yypo9sJk). I tried it, but didn't like the consistency.
-
Hi Cathy......I will give your brownie recipe a go for this weekend.
I just wanted to ask, obviously once cooked it is moist enough to be rolled and held into shape with out any added icing ?
I did make a vanilla version, but did have to add buttercream to moisten and roll into balls.
If I don't have to use buttercream or icing.....I will be rapt!
Thought I'd post a picture of the cake pops I made late last week.
Time consuming, fiddly, but I had fun doing them.......and it is slightly addictive ;)
A big tip if anyone wants to make them.....melt your "melting chocolate", or "candy melts" in a little electric fondue pot.....it makes the process so much easier, with out the chocolate getting thick and gluggy.
P.S. Cathy.......what size tin did you use for baking?
-
clever girl maddy :o i bet they are extremely popular!
-
Toooooo cute maddy :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* Just toooooooo cute
-
They are absolutely gorgeous Maddy. :) :)
-
i made cake pops once and we didn't like them all that much. they are also way too fiddly for my liking, being a fundamentally lazy cook! lol

Maddy, your cake pops look fantastic! Yes, this recipe was perfectly moist enough. And I liked this recipe as the ingredients suited my needs ie no funny numbers etc. And no, I didn't have to add any buttercream or icing.
I don't remember exactly what size tin I used - I think it was a slice type tin?
Brazen - you can adapt any moist brownie recipe that your family like. Sometime I'll try the Apple and Date brownies from the vegetarian cookbook - they're beautifully moist, and much less sugar than this recipe.
-
ahh the cake pops i made were with cream cheese, which we weren't that keen on. though... my family aren't that keen on brownies either lol
i will try those brownies from the vego book though, they sound interesting!
-
What about using your carrot cake recipe Karen, that is nice and moist and I'm sure it would roll into balls easily.
-
Oooh :o :o Yes Yes, thank you Maddy for the inspiration :-* :-* :-*
Went on Amazon and checked out the short video... I'm hooked!
Now I have something else to look forward to :D These little beauties look soo cute :) :) :)
-
They are time consuming hestonfan, but fun to make.
I now use a little electric chocolate fondue pot for the melting and dipping process, and makes life a whole lot easier ;)
I actually have made a white brownie version of Cathy's recipe, all rolled into balls and ready for dipping today.
I will attempt to make fairy girls for a friends Daughters 5th Birthday tomorrow.
I am a little concerned that the brownie mix is a little bit crumbly though, so I have a pre-baked caked defrosted, just in case it doesn't work out.
Will post some photo's when I finish :)
-
Well I finished and delivered them, and apparently have been demolished!

I used Parisian fairy floss for the hair, but unfortunately the moisture in the air deflated their fluffy locks by the morning, and ended up flat and sticky instead >:( but am told the little party goers didn't notice a thing ;)
-
They are absolutely beautiful Maddy, you are a very talented lady.I love all the different expression on the faces, especially the one winking at us.I'm pleased all your effort was appreciated by the party girls. :)
-
Take a bow maddy they are fantastic. You could always go into business making these little morsels for parties you know :D
Did your brownie mixture work or did you have to use the cake you defrosted?
-

I did stick with the brownie mix. It's hard to gauge Judy.......I think I did bake it in a too large tin, so there ended up a lot of harder bits that didn't break down into a smooth ball (after I cut the real hard edges off). The mix itself worked fine, and much preferred the taste though.
I will make Cathy's chocolate version, and do things differently. I think because I blitzed it in the TM before rolling, didn't help as I wasn't adding extra icing.
Coulda-woulda-shoulda ;D

Thank-you, but no. That would just do my head in! :P ;D
-
Sad to see the Persian fairy floss (pashmek) ended up looking like they had a bad hair day. But like the idea - maybe just try adding a bit more of it next time? It goes a long way.
Maybe dessicated coconut ? like lamingtons instead - short hair is trendy !!
-
hi, maddy! i've only stumbled onto this and noticed you preordered the book. well, i'll tell you what i did...i went tearing all over town looking for the cookie cutter she used to cut out the base for the cupcake pops. that was ages ago and i still haven't done a thing. sound familiar? it's just that i've been doing a gazillion other things (which are not memorable...). you are so incredible
-
LoL whisks........I'm just incredibly nuts for spending way too much time making them! :P
That book is now old, but I soak up all the beautiful ideas. Unfortunately stumbled across another pop book on Book depository today....but it's still at pre-order status. 125 days til release :-))
Has a lot more recipes, so it's in my basket ;)
As for the cookie cutter whisks......forget it.....I bought this cake pop mold today, and I think it should end pop shaping frustration forever!......I hope so anway :)

Bought it from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Cupcake-POP-Mold-/130449502363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5f65709b
I just thought today of a no-bake way of doing them, so I will test it out first before posting.
-
That's going to make things a lot easier Maddy. I've just ordered 1 - wanted to order 3 as a great little Christmas gift but there was nowhere on the order form to change the quantity to 3. Have sent an email off to them though so hopefully will get an answer back.
-
oh, is that why i haven't done anything with the cookie cutter yet? trust you to find something like that. you do realise i still haven't bought anything off ebay yet? nor have i sold anything. one day.....
-
Whisks I'm another who doesn't use e-bay. I wouldn't know how.
-

LoL whisks......ebay is fabulous......but a little too convenient :P especially if you are spur-of-the-moment shopper like me 8)
Judy....aren't they cute! The oreo recipe that comes with could be interesting :-\ imagine it to be quite sweet!
I can't wait to try it out when it arrives.
-
Can't wait to see how big they are maddy, very small I imagine. I have never done anything like this before so will have to get some practise in before GD's 6th birthday on 30/12. You may be hearing from me for advice :P :P ;D ;D
-
Thank you so much for the brownie conversion and making me aware of bakerella web site and their spiders
Brownie tasted so good. Even the trimmed parts are not wasted! :)
Only difference is I didn't have self raising flour. I used plain flour and added baking powder myself
I used you brownie conversion to make spiders for Halloween: http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=4806.0

Maddy, I have my youngest DD's 6th b'day coming up on 30/11 - too bad you don't want to go into business, it might have saved me from having to make these. Yours look so adorable. DD is having a pink & purple picnic party so these are on my list to make as the b'day cake - saves slicing a cake and they are sure to be a hit if the weather cools down enough for me to want to do the cooking.
-
These will be perfect for your Daughters party! Kids just love them.
I did make some recently just by mixing up jam lamingtons with a cup of coconut......it certainly made it a much quicker process.
The mix was a little too moist though, so I will try with just plain ones next time. I'm still experimenting with quick mix options ;)
I stored these ones in a biscuit tin filled with salt......they seemed to stay put....until they were demolished at least :)
-
You could save some polystyrene packaging and put them in that maddy. I just threw a batch out and could kick myself :D
Then there's those florist blocks, can probably find them in the cheap shops, or large oranges cut in half would hold a few too.
-
I do use a polystyrene block, which does work.....apart from little bits of it that seem to fly around (not to mention the mess it made to cut it into shape :-)))
Florists foam can work, but you get it all over the sticks, which can look like mould :P
Because I'm making them more frequently, I have been contemplating this acrylic stand from the U.S.
Hubby's just too busy at the moment to make me something similar.
-
Now there's an idea. My DH could knock me up a wooden one I am sure but he is tied up making pinatas for the kids now until Christmas.
-
Judy, could you post a photo of his pinata's?
What a clever man he is :) Are they hard to make?.......kids always want one for occasions, but I hate the price tag attached.....because they're demolished in minutes!
-
I did intend to maddy when they are all done. He is very slow at it and it takes him weeks to make the 5 needed. He has nearly finished the truck and the horse so will post pictures of those 2 as soon as he has completed them, next week maybe. He has been doing it for 3 years now - one year he made for great-nieces/nephews too so it was 7 that year. You should see my dining room table where he does all this work - good thing I have not planned any dinner visitors :-)) :-)) Still, I can't complain about the workshop inside the house, it is for the kids afterall and keeps him occupied albeit he gets very frustrated at times. He comes up with some good ideas though and we start saving all types of cardboard boxes, (tablet boxes, cereal, tissue etc) towards the end of the year so that he has plenty to work with. Sometimes you can recycle the pinata the following year if just the body is damaged - the little ones don't do too much damage to them but the older ones smash them to bits.
