So inspired by Chelsea ;) I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread here to encourage healthy eating choices (not that we don't already do that with the TM anyway avoiding pre prepared foods etc)
I guess my goal this year is to be more active, to eat a little less so that I can drop a few kilos and have more energy etc and I would love everyones ideas support etc 8)
Anybody else in?

Funnily enough, I have just been thinking much the same thing myself the last couple of days. My husband has slightly elevated cholesterol levels and we are both overweight. All those lovely sweet things on this forum have been fabulous, and I've loved experimenting with them, but not so good for us and I love my husband more than sweet things, so I've got to reform.
I'm a vegetarian and my husband calls himself a "vegetarian by marriage" so I would really love to see some great, healthy heart type vegetarian recipes or suggestions.

I was involved with helping to run a project called Small Changes which looked at ways of changing behaviour leading to long-term health gains. Some of the attendees felt if was more of a long-term solution than other things they had tried (Slimming World or Weight Watchers) which focussed on a specific goal
The main mantra was "Eat Less, Exercise More". Also it is proven that if you try and make radical changes to your life-style, it is really difficult to maintain these changes and you lose motivation if you fail. The way to go is to start small. For instance, if you want to cut out eating biscuits, instead of cutting them out altogether, you start by only having them 3 times a week instead of 7. Each week you make a small change like that, some relating to eating (maybe smaller portion sizes, less fat etc.) and some to exercise (eg. use a pedometer and increase your step count by 10% each week).
It is also not a crime to have days where you eat unhealthy things or don't exercise so long as you don't have too many of them.
It also helps to keep a log of everything you eat each day and also the exercise you do each day. If you review the log at the end of the week, you might notice that you are snacking a lot, or maybe not eating enough veg. or so on.

I think a healthy choice support thread is a great idea. I have just joined WW online as it is free for two weeks and they have a new points system in place which I feel is focusing on healthy eating. I have been busy entering all my recipes in the data base and finding how many points they are. It does make you stop and think about what you are eating. I like Katya idea of small changes as it is a lifestyle change that we need to make :)

why is it that the more exercise i get the more chocolate i want to eat? lol

I think this thread is a great idea. Since getting my TMX I have been trying to buy more fresh produce and make so much more from scratch. I would particularly love to see lots of ideas for healthy and tasty things to give the kids at school. I tend to put a lot of fruit in their lunches along with a sandwich or wrap but never quite know what else to add in and find I spend a lot of time standing looking at the pantry with some kind of vain hope that the healthy snack fairies came and put some ideas in there over night. No luck yet though...
The little changes idea is a great one too. So far I have changed our salt from standard table salt to celtic sea salt as it has so many more vitamins and minerals in it. Next will be replacing cocoa with cacao, followed by rapdurra instead of sugar. I figure if we are going to use all those things then at least I should be using those that add to my families health rather than detracting or making no difference.
-
There are so many different approaches to loosing weight and gaining health and I think it is important to find what works for you. Some people thrive on the structure of counting points or calories (and some continue doing it forever) and others find it tedious and prefer to make more holistic lifestyle changes. For me I really just needed to get exercising each day (stop making excuses) and to cut down on my snacks and meal portions.
I also needed to really think about the food I was making for myself and our family. We eat 99% preservative free food but it isn't always healthy food. Sweet homemade biscuits made with organic white flour and raw organic sugar or rapadura aren't healthy. They are healthier than many bought biscuits, but still aren't healthy. Nice for a treat of course but not everyday.
I am on my way to loosing my 4th kilo. Besides feeling great in my clothes, I am sleeping well, am finally free from indigestion, have greatly reduced sinus problems and have a much stronger and energised body. I had truly forgotten how wonderful it feels to be fit and "slimmer" again. I kept saying I was happy with being a size 14/16 but deep down I really wasn't.
Good luck to everyone who is making changes out there!!!

Thanks for starting this thread Megan. Since having the TM (1 month now) I've really started to make healthy choices for my family and me. Much like you Chelsea we're going back to natural ingredients. It's taking a bit of getting used to on their part and now they really enjoy the variety. Although the weight isn't dropping off me, I feel really good and have heaps of energy (even at the moment when things are stressful - that's always a good sign). I'm even getting out of bed early to exercise. I think often the eating and exercise go hand in hand, if you only do 1 you don't really have the energy or will for the other. We're also taking small steps that are achievable and fit in with our lifestyle.
KerryN. I struggled for ideas for breakfast and lunch boxes so I went through this forum and some recipe books and came up with a list of things that would make a healthy lunch. Some may not appear so, but as Chelsea mentioned, with the right ingredients they can be just that. Here's the list if you are interested. I also posted a list for breakfast - overlaps with some lunch. I'm finding these list very useful as they have heaps of variety and I know and I can find the recipes on the forum or in books. I print both lists on 8*15 cards and have them in the kitchen so they are ready to consult the night before or in the morning.

What a great idea. I am also analyzing my family's eating habits. my self and my husband need to loose a few kg and I also have a son with ADD who I think would benefit from a preservative free (or close to) diet. I agree that what we decide to do needs to be a life style change. we all know diets don't work forever. And I think we all understand that if we eat more calorie's in a day than we burn we will put on weight and if we eat less calories that we burn we will lose weight. Its that simple. We just have to remind our selves every time we put something in our mouth.
I think the TM will make life easier for my family to make healthy meals
-
Some may not appear so, but as Chelsea mentioned, with the right ingredients they can be just that.
LOL - I think I am actually saying the opposite ;D.
Many of the breads and things that I make are preservative free but that doesn't mean that they are healthy. I went to listen to Cyndi O'Meara speak last year and she said that she makes a "healthy" chocolate cake using organic ingredients. Using organic raw sugar and organic white flour doesn't make a cake healthy though. It makes the cake chemical free (which is still a good thing) and a little bit healthier but sugar and flour are still not healthy ingredients. I think it is great to be preservative free, but I have learnt that preservative free cooking doesn't automatically equate to cooking healthy food that will encourage a healthy weight and lifestyle.
-
Chelsea, Funny. I now realise what you wrote. I must have skimmed over it and thought that's what I do. I think that you can still make them healthy. You can control the sugar (not the fat so much, but look for ones that work). In moderation and as a snack it's good. We've also found that we are actually eating less food because it has heaps of flavour and nutrients.
-
Very true. We are so much more in control and aware when we are cooking our own foods. :)
-
Sue thanks heaps for that list! I will print this out and refer to it as well.
I was getting up at 5.45am to go to the gym for over a year and felt much better for it. Then I had a pretty serious car accident which had me out of commission for nearly 6 months and I just can't seem to find the motivation to go back to it. I am going back to uni this year (part time) and have just started a new part time job too, so I think I am going to be faced with the same situation. I can't find time during the day so will need to start making time again and that means early mornings again. Of course, the dog would love it if I just got up early to take him for a walk rather than going to the gym.
We are also going to buy new bowls as the ones we have are just too large and encourage us in over eating which is certainly a problem for us. Having said that Cyndi O'Meara does stress that if we eat good quality foods that the quantities will take care of themselves.
At the moment I am taking comfort from knowing that I if make the cheese and bacon roll (with some wholegrains and chia) then at least I know what went in it, rather than getting them from the supermarket or the bakery with who knows what added to make it last longer on the shelf. I am also slowly coming round to the value of organic produce and choosing products that are as close to nature as they can be.
-
Well tonight I had a small serve of pasta and followed it with a serve of salad - carrot cucumber and small bit of avocado I did put a little evoo and balsamic on it. It is a start. I think cutting down a bit on carbs and upping veg is a good way to go as the kids love pasta so it is a meal I know won't get complaints, so features a fair bit for us.
-
I'm finding that my boys who are always hungry, used to fill up on all the bad stuff, which was totally my fault as I was the one to buy it and put in in the cupboard. Now, when they are hungry, more often than not, they will grab some fruit or yoghurt or make themselves a sandwich! I don't keep anything packaged in the cupboard anymore. My 6yr old even picks up something and says " Mum, is this good for me?".
I think they are enjoying the preservative free feeling as I have noticed their behaviour is improving(well, a little bit and it's still school holidays)
baby steps!
-
As well as looking at what is going into the food, portion size is a good way of controlling what is consumed. I don't agree with the Cyndi O'Meara comment that good quality food will control quantities.... it certainly doesn't happen with me ;D
One of the small changes I made was to make sure that I had a smaller portion of carbohydrates than my OH and to put less on the plate than I thought I wanted. I could always have a second helping but would wait 5 minutes before going for it and, more often than not, would find that I was full.
Another tip is to eat slowly and chew more before swallowing.
-
Some great points have been made. I think it is very important to be aware of what we put in our mouths. The weight goes on easily but is very hard to move once it's there. All things in moderation. If you crave a biscuit by all means have it. But only the one and don't be angry at yourself for having it. The most important thing for me is not to give up when you fail, just pick yourself up and 'be good' again. It is so easy to lose a little, relax, and then put on twice as much weight.
-
why is it that the more exercise i get the more chocolate i want to eat? lol
Ha ha ha!!!! Me too!! :D

Great thread! I don't actually have a problem with gaining too much weight (actually, I've always struggled to gain weight, being naturally a skinny-minny), but over the years I've made more and more healthy food choices... changing things little by little... Natural, unrefined sweeteners (in moderation), freshly ground (preferably soaked) wholegrain flours (not wheat, as it tends to cause a lot of health problems), raw or fermented dairy in small amounts (but now I can't seem to handle it hardly ever), and lots of fresh (organic) fruit and veges. Raw cacao, rapadura, coconut oil, organic foods... it all takes time to change over the way you used to do things, but it's so worth it.
I don't always succeed in this - especially when I get really busy and forget to soak grains, or I'm out and have to buy something to eat, but I try to do 90% healthy, 10% not (if I must). I'm a lot healthier than I used to be! I think that when you're eating the right diet for your body, and excercising, your weight will level out to where it should be. When I started getting serious about eating healthy (and avoiding sugar, wheat and dairy), for the first time in my life I got rid of the hayfever and allergies and headaches I'd always had, slept better, gained weight to a healthier level, stopped having blood sugar lows, my skin cleared up (I'd had a bit of trouble with adult acne), stopped having leg cramps... so many things improved!!! I really notice it when I get slack with my diet - I get so tired and fuzzy-headed and head-achy and sneezy - it's awful.
So it's made a big difference for me! :)
-
hhmm ..that's very interesting reading ! I always have been skeptical of the no wheat/dairy but that is a big difference for you and we have several of those symptoms in this house which have not been cured by going (mostly) organic/chemical free, so maybe it's time we cut down on wheat/dairy and sugar ! :o
-
I just went dairy and sugar free for just over a week (not long I realise ;)).
Without dairy my hayfever and sinus problems cleared up completely and I felt wonderful. Last night we had people over for dinner though and we had some homemade pizza (with cheese) and homemade ice cream. I only had tiny serves, but today woke up sneezing and feeling very yucko. I know dairy makes me feel terrible, but I find it so hard to refuse.
Going without sugar/rapadura was really tough and I was SO crabby for a couple of days. I was really getting addicted to it though and craving something sweet every 2/3 hours. Not good! I don't crave sweet things anymore and am on top of it now thankully. I have read that sugar addiction normally takes 2 weeks to get over but I was fine by the 4th day. :)
-
Well today I had healthy breakfast bircher fruit yoghurt and clsa one piece of toast as a snack with nut butter and a scrape of jam, salad for lunch with a bit of cheddar and cashews a few crackers with capsicum cashew dip on it. Quirky Jo's TMX fried rice with veg for dinner. Not a bad effort ;D and I took both boys out (not together) on the new wee hoo I-go we bought www.weehoobicycletrailer.com/iGo.html just around two blocks but it is a start ;)
I am trying to be more aware of snacking and eating out of boredom and for relaxation. I know that sounds crazy but I often want to eat when the kids are napping or in bed for the night because I can enjoy it uninterrupted :-)). I also really am battling my sweet tooth. Baby steps :)
-
This is a thread which really interests me. I think the TMX can really support healthy choices - and not so healthy ones! I found myself becoming so intoxicated with bread recipes that I was eating far too much of it and paying the price on the scales (and exercising very little doesn't help this scenario). The TMX makes so many 'treat' like recipes so easy that it can be too easy to just whip up a batch of double choc biscuits or some ice cream...
But the TMX can definitely help people make healthy choices more easily. I am just reading the vegetarian cookbook again - try cooking more pulses, different types of grains and serve this with some steamed fish, chicken and a big salad with some tasty TMX dressing made with a cold pressed oil - extremely healthy eating, and tasty. Make some dukkah as per the EDC and smear it over some salmon pieces and bake in the oven, and serve with steamed vegetables. Just some suggestions which I know are healthy, tasty and satifsying!
As for carbs, the information on this website extremely useful - http://philmaffetone.com/2weektest.cfm (http://philmaffetone.com/2weektest.cfm). Those engaged with the 'battle of the carbs' may find it of some assistance.
-
OMG thanks Jo. I used to have really terrible blood sugar lows (all my life) but have been so much better the last few years, but yesterday had a medium bad one. I'm eating so much more carbs with tmx meals than I had been though was starting to cut back (well think about it).
Will try to go low carb again and see how I go.
Don't like to hear about the weight thing. I'm finding after number 3 and past 40 my 'natural' weight is just not where I want it to be!!
-
Thanks for starting this thread Meagan, wonderful support and ideas from all - the inspiration which I needed as a motivator - thank you all. :) :D :)
-
Great going Meagan. You are off to a champion start!!!
I just thought of something that has really been helping me along. I was worried about giving up some of the baking that I normally do as I really enjoy my baking (and eating). I decided that I needed to focus on enjoyable things other than food, so I wrote a big list of things that I enjoy doing. Each night when I feel I deserve a little reward for my healthy day, I choose something to do off my list. Some of the things I have on there include reading a novel in my comfy chair, soaking in a bubble bath, giving myself a manicure and buying a trashy gossip magazine :-)) ;D. Thinking about my list brightens my day and gives me something special to look forward to when the boys go to bed (instead of a couple of biscuits). :)

I love your idea Chelsea :) I used to knit at night but with Thermomix and the forum and house stuff it has fallen to the wayside maybe I need to get back into that as my 'treat'
What do you all think about eating fruit and yoghurt at night 9/9.30 as an alternative to ice-cream lol I did that last night. I guess it is better than something filled with non natural sugar ???
-

Sounds like a great idea Meagan. On our Small Changes course we would suggest dried fruit as an after-dinner snack if people felt they needed it. Another idea is to postpone having your pudding until later in the evening rather than having it immediately after the meal.
-
I have just thought of another couple of things I want to do ......drink more water, I have a new water bottle which is helping with this one. Also go to bed earlier so it is not soooo hard to get out of bed in the mornings, which in turn will help me to do early morning exercise ;)
I also have a voucher for three sessions with a personal trainer that I asked for for Christmas so I must book that in with her soon so I can formulate a plan of attack.
Anyway I am going to sleep now.
-
Many years ago I was pretty sick and, in the course of trying to find some help with my illness, I went to a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. We were discussing food, eating, etc. and he said that, according to the principles of Chinese medicine, it was not good for your body to eat within four hours of going to bed. I try to follow that advice and, personally, I haven't really found much difference, so I can't say whether it is so or not, but I also prefer to eat earlier than later in the evening anyway.
My husband (who always has to have a cuppa after dinner) has also found that drinking Rooibos tea (southern Africa's "bush tea" for anyone who reads Alexander McCall Smith's books) makes a difference at night as it is either no or low caffeine so allows him a more restful sleep.
I think QuirkyJo will know more about these matters than I, but just wanted to pass on those comments.
-
I drink Rooibos tea too - I found a really delicious one the other day, it's Rooibos Spice and has cinnamon, cloves, cacao shells (!), ginger, aniseed, star anise, cardamom & pepper in it! So yummy. (As soon as I saw 'cacao' on the ingredients list I knew I had to try it!! ;) ) I can't handle any caffeine after about lunch time - just don't sleep at night if I have it.
I'm afraid I eat right up to bed time - I can't sleep if I'm hungry! (And I have to eat small amounts often because of the low blood sugar thing.) My naturopath told me you shouldn't eat close to bed time because it will make it harder to sleep, but I'm the opposite! I sleep best on a full tummy! ;D
I'm trying to drink more water too - I get very slack with that in cooler weather. And I definitely need to get to bed earlier!!! (It's just that it's so lovely and quiet when the kids are all in bed asleep - I love that time of night, and tend to stay up too long!)
I'm trying to get back into a regular excercise routine - I used to do Pilates every day and ride my bike as well a lot, but I've gotten so busy it's hard to fit it in... and the constant wet weather makes it hard to want to ride a bike!! So I'm trying to just get back into the Pilates each morning. I've put excercise time on the kid's schedules too, and they think it's great to have it scheduled in - breaks up the morning routine so it's not just all jobs! (I let them ride bikes/scooters/jump on trampoline/jog/do Pilates for excercise time.)
I don't eat a lot of desserts and baking (even though it may look like it from looking at my blog! - My kids eat most of it, and I don't make it every day) - my special treat is a small piece of my homemade chocolate. :) It's so dark and rich that a small piece is satisfying, and I only have a bit once every day or two, so it's not a big deal. Besides, it's healthy chocolate!! ;D And a sorbet or fruity dream or banana ice-cream every couple of days seems to keep the family happy, so that's a healthy sweet. (I make fruity dream with about 50g raw honey now, instead of rapadura - it's nice!)
-
A good day today again normal bircher breakfast, coffee, left over tmx fried rice for lunch, tea, tacos for dinner, small bowl of instant banana cocoa agave ice-cream. No formal exercise but cleaned the house etc so got some exercise from that.
-
I wish that exercising the brain counted as calorie burning...
-
I've had a good couple of days - lot's of power walks without the kids as Hubby is on holidays. I don't think I have lost any more weight but my body is certainly getting stronger. I have been eating small portions of family meals with extra garden salad or steamed veg on the side. I am finding whole grains a godsend - they are so healthy and filling. Last night we had honey mustard chicken with brown rice and steamed veg and my little serving was so filling because of the brown rice. I love being able to eat lovely dishes and am finding that I am really satisfied with a small serving.
For any parents who are wanting to convert to brown rice and are worried about the kids reaction, I suggest starting with 1/3 brown rice to 2/3 white rice and gradually building it up. For a couple of months I was cooking 100g brown rice for 20 minutes and then adding 200g white rice and cooking for a further 16 minutes. Now the kids (and Hubby) are happy just to eat brown rice when it is served with a saucy dish and two-thirds brown rice in dishes such as Quirky fried rice. A small victory! :)
As I am getting closer to my goals I am starting to think about how I am going to keep healthy and keep the weight off long term. I know I need to keep exercising and find different ways to exercise (perhaps yoga or pilates would be good during the winter months). With regard to food I like the idea of not depriving myself but focusing on small portions with healthy sides. It seems realistic and sensible - if I can stay focused.
-
I'm loosly following Cindi O'Mera & CSIRO - basically low carbs. Have been having Cindi's shakes for breaky for a week and salads for lunch. Today is tomato soup for lunch :) - the kids are loving the shakes (theirs doesn't have the raw egg or minerals) but I give them some bible bread as well - got to fill up those growing bodies. I'm lunch - I got my TM when the kids were young (well they still are.. 1 & 2) so they don't know any different re brown rice and such ;). Am working on finding time to exercise :-))
-
Chelsea what do you have in your morning smoothie?
-
What a great thread! I am new to the forums and I hope you don't mind me joining in :) I should get my thermomix in the next few days and I hope it will help bring the changes my family so desperately needs! My son is really really fussy but is getting quite over weight because even though he often refuses dinner he hangs out till he gets carb loaded, sugary food, my daughter who eats much more than him, eats a lot of salads and things and is about 25 kgs less than him, even though they are only 18mths apart. And I am very overweight too, I love eating a certain way but unfortunately I have a food addiction, and so even though I eat good healthy meals I blow it inbetween. Hoping to find some support and inspiration here :)
-
I'm sure you will get plenty of inspiration and support from the forum Coops. It has been fabulous for me. I'm finding with the TM and the cooking I'm losing weight very slowly which is what I love. It's only approx 2kg over 2 months and all I'm doing is preparing meals and snacks with the TM wherever possible and using inspiration from the forum. I still have a long way to go and I'm not stressing because I know it will now happen and be sustainable weightloss.
-
Anyone is welcome to give or receive support ;D welcome Coops :)
-
Well done Meagan and everyone else.
-
Chelsea what do you have in your morning smoothie?
My Hubby generally makes them while I am in the shower. Ours are fruit-based smoothies (thick and puply ;)) with a few tablespoons of chia gel, 500g water and some ice cubes thrown in. At the moment fruit-wise I think he is putting in an orange, banana, kiwi, apple and some frozen blueberries. That amount serves 4. We were having green smoothies with spinach and silverbeet leaves, but have since discovered that our youngest son is allergic to green veg. We have our smoothies as part of breakfast - usually with a small wholegrain muffin. I tried Cyndi's smoothie and loved the taste. I needed to share it with Hubby though as it was a bit much just for me. :)
-
Thanks Chelsea :)
Well I was very good yesterday some serious self control. Went to the pub for my fortnightly knitting group and drank water and didn't have my usual wedges. I was very proud of myself!! Today was a bit of a "20" day as in the 80/20 theory lol we normally have pancakes on a Sunday and today was no different, then coffee, went to the pool with the family, salad sandwich for lunch homemade iced coffee with a small scoop of edc ice-cream picnic tea - homemade sushi, fruit and the kids ate mini cyndi sausage rolls, I had two of those. Edc lemonade, small scoop edc ice-cream with TMX Milo on top, one square 70% lindt chocolate. Hmmmm back to the more controlled eating tomorrow and a bike ride with DS 4 on the back for at least 30 mins in the morning.
How is everyone else going??
-
I'm not going as well as you, Meagan. I am working on making my portions smaller and avoiding the local French Chocolatier (who does the best chocolates ever!). These two aspects are working so far, I'm not weighing myself, at this stage, but I am feeling a little better about my efforts to behave.
Exercise always has been - and always will be - my main stumbling block. We live in Melbourne during the week so I tend to walk most places - but I use the term "walk" loosely. I start out with good intentions, striding along the street, but then I forget I am meant to be getting some exercise and drop back into my usual 'stroll', which really does me no good at all. Ah well, I'll keep at it.
-
Cuilidh, you have to start somewhere ;)
Well I did a 40 minute ride this morning ;D with ds4 on the back in the weehoo ( he loves it and asks to go in it every day now :)) :o I am very proud of myself!! That is the first proper ride I have been on for years. Cada with yoghurt and berries for bfast sushi for morning tea/ lunch. My aim is to exercise 5 out of 7 days this week. Also to get up earlier in preparation for DH going back to work next week and me being on my own with the kids again.
I feel great today for having exercised, so much more energy :-*
-
Thanks for your support, Meagan
-
Well done, Meagan!! I feel dreadful today - bad hayfever turning into a cold :( I feel the need for lots of raw fruit and veges and juices! Made chicken soup for lunch, and had a grapefruit for morning tea - better go make a juice for afternoon tea!
-
I'm trying really hard to get my boys (5 and nearly 3) to stop wanting so many processed bars (milo bars, lcms, etc.) so have started making them myself since getting tmx. Trouble is, the won't eat anything homemade. And they can tell - I've even tried making them when they are not home and putting them in commercial packaging, but the 5 yo still says "no, you made this - I don't like it." Charming hey! I think they are so addicted to the crap I used to let them eat that they will not eat the home made stuff.
-
I am lucky in the sense my boys are little and have only ever had homemade stuff at our house. I guess if it isn't in the pantry they won't eat it. Easier said than done I am sure. Have you sat down and talked to them/ explained why you want to make the changes? Ie health additives preservatives cost behavior etc.
Maybe the transition needs to be gradual. So one bar every 2 or 3 days with homemade on offer on the other days. Have you tried involving them in the making?
I hope it changes for you. Kids can be so harsh sometimes.
I know the healthy kids talk I went to said it takes kids two weeks to reprogram ie sweet yoghurt to natural etc.
-
While we have never really had a lot of snack foods in the house (as my DH has NO willpower) my kids certainly love them. I'm lucky in that they will eat (or at least taste) anything that has chocolate in it so I don't have so much trouble with the homemade versus bought. However my elder son (9) will say he likes something the first time then refuse to eat it again - very frustrating. He is becoming a lot fussier too. I need to try out some muesli bars before school goes back though.
As for exercise, my kids are a bit hit and miss. My eldest hates the idea of going out most of the time (eg. walking the dog) but then usually enjoys himself, despite his very best efforts to stay grumpy and unhappy. The younger (6 next week) is usually quite happy to get out and about and often asks "can we walk there" which is great but he has no sense of distance so will ask this when visiting my Mum over 30km away.
We did go on a bike ride with our Cub Scout pack yesterday though. From Yarra Junction to Warbuton (about 18kms return) and it is a great ride. Elder DS did it on his own bike with no gears and I was really proud of him. Younger went on his own bike attached to the back of mine with a Trailgater, so I was exhausted by the end. The thing I was most proud of though was our dinner last night wasn't take away! We stopped on the way home and bought enough groceries just to make dinner.
Went for another walk/ride today with the kids too. Mind you this kind of walk isn't really exerising other than being more movement than if I didn't go. As you say though Megan, you have to start somewhere and we do what we can within the constraints we have.
-
Exercise always has been - and always will be - my main stumbling block.
Have you thought about timing your walks? If you are doing the same walks regularly, then you could set yourself goals of trying to do it a bit faster each week - nothing too ambitious mind ;D ;D
-
My top tips- no eating after 8pm, period! That's when a lot of the bad stuff gets consumed, or eating for reasons other than hunger. I also have been getting up at 5.50am and going for 6am walks with friends. We chat, we don't notice the workout. Plus, we are home before the husbands or kids even wake up :) Exercise done for the day. Oh, and I also find I eat better during the day as I don't want to "waste" the early morning walk :D
-
I'm trying really hard to get my boys (5 and nearly 3) to stop wanting so many processed bars (milo bars, lcms, etc.) so have started making them myself since getting tmx.
My kids always had easy to get snack foods in the cupboard too, but I just said to them that I'm not buying it anymore and I'm making homemade things. They are 6,11 & 13 and I explained to them why, now they are snacking on fruit, bircher muesli, or make themselves a sandwich. Occasionally they will winge but if I don't buy it, they can't eat it. Normally they want lollies or something bad for them when we go shopping and today my 6 yr old begged me to buy him a small tub of yoghurt that he could eat in the car on the way home!!! Now that's progress!!!

That's a brilliant idea, Katya, thanks, I'll give it a go. I bought a pedometer a while ago, but it was so complicated to use I gave up on it but I think it has a 'stopwatch' on it somewhere so perhaps I'll drag it and the instruction book out again and see how it goes.
-
Bike riding again this morning with ds4 ;D feel great, bottom not faring so well :-\ :D cada with berries and yoghurt again this morning. I think I have made a huge mental shift ;D pretty happy about that. I am feeling really dedicated to change. Have a great day everyone ;)
-
I'm trying to have more raw foods and salads - having a raw soup for lunch today (with lots of garlic to chase off any bugs!) with gluten free pizza bianca - yum! Not doing so well with the excercise though... I should do some when my dh does his - he even bought two total gyms so we could use them together! He does gym and exercises every day - but I always seem to be cooking when he's exercising in the evening. :D He bought me a fit ball the other day, and now he's ordered me a book of exercises for it... so I'd better do some!
-
I agree that kids can be so difficult somtimes! I posted a request on here for alternatives commercial breakfast cereals, and got a heap of wonderful ideas from people, and DH and myself and our 18 month old are loving them .......... but stubborn Mr nearly-4 refuses to eat anything except his weetbix. I have tried sneaking bits of CADA or raw fruit cereal into his weetbix, hoping to slowly increase the amount he eats ...... but even just the tiniest amout of anything else, and he flatly refuses to eat breakfast at all >:(
But one victory ..... we have been using star charts for certain behaviours, using a choc frog as a reward for getting 5 stars ...... the other day DS asked for a choc ball (quirkyjo's raw cacao treat ball) instead of his choc frog!! YAY!! ;D ;D small steps .......
-
Can someone tell me what the CADA breakfast is please?
I have been having a variation on Cyndi O's oats. Her recipe was way too sweet for me, so I am trying some alternatives. Last two days was a blized whole apple with oats, chia and water. It was OK but I did add a little sugar the first day, while today I added some strawberries from the garden and some frozen blueberries. I may add the berries in to cook next time.
We also did another cycle ride today, not too far though, only to friends but it was better than taking the car. DS9 went his own way home and took much longer than expected, was just starting to get worried. Then when he did get home he asked if he could go for a ride on his own around his school. this is progress! I wish though that it was way back when I was a kid and our parents didn't bat an eyelid at kids riding bikes around the streets. I did let him go around the block a few times by himself though and will discuss the foray to school with DH. It seems that the extra independence and trust has invigorated him.

Kerryn, here's the CADA thread

Exactly right! Parents nowadays stifle their kids, every thing they do is supervised and its not good for childrens development.
-
Coffee after breakfast Sushi for lunch a peach for a snack homemade pizza for dinner and a small bowl of frozen choc custard. not too bad for food intake except the dinner side of things. Overall happy with my day.
-
Well done.
-
Bumpity bump ;D
Bike ride with DS2 this morning, was a lot quieter than riding with DS 4 who doesn't shut up lol I think there were about 5 words from #2 boat duck swan bike and truck lol the rest was the wind rushing past my ears. I am actually really enjoying the riding thing. Pretty good food day today breakfast as usual, coffee (this will stop when DH goes back to work as I can never be bothered making myself one in the manual coffee machine) a couple of small biscuits and a cuppa at a friends for morning tea, lunch was 5 rice thins with avocado tomato cucumber and cheese, dinner was quirky jos cashew chicken reheated from last night. A couple of teaspoons of TMX Milo ( couldn't resist when putting it on thekids yoghurt) oh I did have a shandy with dinner. It has been a long day with the kids :-))
How is everyone else going?
-
Well done Meagan and thanks for keeping this thread going. I Reached the 3kg mark since I got my TM in mid December and wasn't even trying. I was amazed as I'm just going about usual business and using the Thermomix to make real food. Cyndi's smoothies for breakfast are fantastic and I look forward to them everymorning and have some left over. Lunch is usually what ever is around and that's got to be healthy as we don't have too much of anything else in the pantry and fridge. I have afternoon with the kids which today was a small piece of Pizza Biance and some fruit and dinner was steak with some mushroom sauce (didn't need the cream) and steamed veges. I love that I'm not hungry. I still get to bake, cook and be creative in the kitchen. I used to sample all the empty calorie items I made (I didn't realise they were so at the time). I hope everyone else is having good results with their healthy choices. Keep up the good work.
-
I am sure it is a bit of a drag reading about the ins and outs of my day ;) but I will dribble on anyway. It keeps me accountable 8) When I woke up this morning it was all quiet so I went for a solo ride ;D haven't had anything to eat as yet. ;)
-
I am still doing my 5.55am walks with girlfriends. Now I actually wake at that time anyway, so it's much easier than the first few days. We do 3 x horrid river steps each time, too- works the glutes! Am going everyday now.
-
It's no drag at all to read about your activities Meagan. What you might like also to do is to keep a log yourself of your daily food intake and exercise undertaken so that you can review it weekly and bask in the glory of your achievements.
I used to have a grid on A4 with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Other and Exercise across the top and days of the week down the side. I found it helpful to fill it in regularly for a few months. Once I stopped doing it, I would go back to doing so if I felt I was getting back into bad habits
The biggest thing is to make the first steps towards change and it looks as if you are doing a great job of that. Keep it up ;) ;)
-
Well done Meagan for keeping us on track!
As an additional supprt if anyone is interested in joining yet another forum ( ;)) try myfitnesspal.com It allows you to track your eating (not only calories but sodium, fat, etc) and log your exercise as well. I found it made it so easy to keep myself accountable, you can even put in your own recipes and it will break it down to show you exactly what you have consumed. I have bronchitis at the moment (in my 3rd week or it grrrr!) so haven't been exercising at all, but as soon as I'm better will be getting back into it. If anyone does want to join (oh and there's an iphone and android app for it too), my name on there is donella73 if you want a friend!
-
Meagan I look forward to reading what you have been up to. I'm still being naught and not walking, I'm blaming the heat. I must admit I do enjoy my morning walk. DD's block is about 2km away and the walk is up to that and back.
-
Boy I had a busy day yesterday and today :o
Yesterday was cyndi protein smoothy :o still can't believe I drank a whole egg raw :-X lol coffee, subway for lunch and friends over for tea - pizza ( again I know!! Twice this week) and the champagne slush from myoc so started the day well but it went downhill from there lol
Today has been flatout. No exercise as child #1 woke at 4.50 with a bad dream and once he got back to sleep #2 woke at 5.19 so an early start making for a long day. Cada and yoghurt for bfast, left over pizza for lunch, chicken pumpkin salad for dinner small scoop edc ice-cream with TMX Milo, need to do a ride or walk tomorrow to make it 5/7 this week.
So cookie food could have been better but not any binge eating or comfort food stuff so that is all up a great week so far ;)
-
It's the comfort stuff that gets you. I know. Also the bits we pop in our mouth instead of the bin. Keep it up. :-*
-
Still pretty good Meagan. What would you have had on such a day if you were't being conscious of your health.
As for my exercise today, I have a really sore bottom. Rode the furtherest I ever have at 64km. I thought I was done at 40 but my lovely DS9 decided he wanted to ride the extra 17km back to the car instead of getting a lift as we planned. I had only had a banana for breakfast so luckily another rider gave me some lollies to keep my blood sugar up. I will be much better prepared with some TM snacks next time. What would you suggest as a good high energy snack when doing fairly strenuous (and yes I realise it's all relative) exercise that is easy to prepare the night before? Not sure about dinner now maybe DS will have to rustle something up for the family since he wore his mum out.
-
One of my favourite high energy snacks are these 'treat balls' (http://quirkycooking.blogspot.com/2010/02/raw-cacao-treat-balls.html) - I've been putting raw cacao nibs in them too, lately, which gives them an extra bit of energy boosting power!!! I also like to eat a banana and a handful of pecans/almonds when I need a quick energy boost, like in the car on the way to a demo... I try to grab a piece of fruit as I rush out the door, and I find it a good idea to keep a ziploc bag of nuts and dried fruit (and bits of dark chocolate if possible) in my handbag! :)
-
Thanks Jo, will give the treat balls a go and see what else I come up with and post that on the forum at a later date.
-
I am so glad to see this thread is still going. It is great to read and very inspiring.
We have just come home from a week at the beach house and it was a big test for me. I stuck to my plan to powerwalk every day, eat small serves and cut out snacks, but I did have an icecream one day and some chips when we were out at dinner one night (oh and some divine chicken and port pate ;)). I really enjoyed the treats though and didn't worry too much. I am so close to reaching the 5kg goal now and am still motivated. I bought a new pair of jeans while we were away and am determined to still be fitting into them in twelve months time.
I did read something interesting in a magazine while we were away regarding weight loss. A fitness trainer said that ultimately your weight is determined by what goes in your mouth. She gave the example that it takes over an hour of full-on exercise to burn-off the calories in one regular muffin (or something like that!). Not a reason to give up exercise of course - but is certainly food for thought. :)

Some time ago, Adam Spencer (on Sleek Geeks) took some people on a walk through Sydney to work off what they had eaten for breakfast. It was really interesting...and exactly what this fitness trainer must be talking about.
The WALK OFF !!
Our volunteers munched on their favourite foods and then had to walk (5.6km per hour) until the kilojoules were used up...
Here's how long they had to walk:
DASHA - 63kg
Low Fat Smoothie & Breakfast bar - 2590 kJ
Approx 16km (just under 3 hours walking)
DEBORAH - 52kg
Large Mocha with cream - 1653 kJ
Approx 11km (2 hours walking)
TANDARRA - 68kg
Banana Split - 2510 kJ
Approx 16km (just under 3 hours walking)
NICK - 88kg
7 slices of gourmet chicken tandoori pizza, salad & a can of soft drink - 6,341 kJ
Approx 25km (4.5 hours walking)
ADAM - 75kg
3 beers, chips and peanuts
Approx 29km (5 ¼ hours walking)
EEEEK!!!! :o :o :o :o
-
And, I've just started on Cyndi's 21 day plan and it's pretty much what she says in there as well where she talks about The Biggest Loser contestants in one of the series.
One group eats what they like and does a ton of exercise, the other group eats well and no exercise - guess which team lost the most weight??? Those who ate well and did no exercise... (paraphrasing...)
-
So no exercise today due to unforeseen circumstances. But a good food day. We always do pancakes on a Sunday morning. I had mine with berries and natural yoghurt, small coffee, huge salad for lunch,Cup of tea, one mini biscuit, rice and chicken/veg stir fry for dinner, glass of milk with TMX Milo.
4/7 days of exercise this week. I was aiming for 5 but I am proud of doing the 4. There is always room for improvement or fine tuning ;)
-
Yes, there was a large scale study done some years ago (and many other similar ones too, I would think) where they had three groups-
1. Diet and excercise
2. Exercise only
3. Diet only
The results were that the diet and exercise group did only marginally better than the diet alone group in terms of weight loss alone. Obviously, there are other benefits of exercise, but it highlights the importance of diet regardless of excercise level.
My friend and I have been doing an email diet diary every night, helps keep us off the naughty treats!

It does make me wonder if it is because people are adding muscle bulk when they exercise which weighs more than fat. I have read that building muscles is important for losing weight because muscle bulk increases metabolism. When I starting exercising each day my weight loss slowed down (in terms of what the scales said) but my clothes were still progressively fitting better at the end of each week. ??? :)
-
I think that is certainly true about muscle bulk, but longer term exercise increases your results as far as body image goes I think. I have done weight watchers a few times and while I was just "eating well" i was losing weight but I didn't notice a really big difference until I added exercise too. Every now and then my DH and I go through a "watch what we do" phase. We start of with taking our measurements, incl. upper arm, chest, waist, thigh and calf, and then monitor our food and exercise. We redo our measurements the same time each week. Just paying attention always makes a difference to me.
Today I started the day with a smoothie - frozen banana, frozen pear puree, handful of blueberries, small handful of hazelnuts and of almonds, an orange (peeled), and soda water (I had no cold water to add). I had a nectarine as I headed out to walk to the dog for 45 minutes. Did the groceries (which has to count for something surely) and then had turkish roll with feta, salmon, avocado and lettuce, and mini roma tomato on the side. Dinner plan is the chicken balls from EDC with parmesan potatoes and steamed vegies (but may swap potatoes for couscous).
Feeling pretty OK so far. Think we might do our measurements again tonight.... with school starting this week it is a good time to get organised.

I think paying attention is the key to long term weight control. My Mum has been slim and trim for as long as I can remember. She isn't naturally a slim person but pays attention to her weight. She weighs herself once a month and if she has put a little weight on she cuts out her morning tea and occcasional dessert until the weight is gone. It normally only takes a week or two to loose it. She is a wonderful cook and loves her food but she does cook mainly healthy food and exercises moderation with treats. I am lucky I have such a good role model but really wish I had her self control. :-)) ;D
-
DH has started back at work today :( but we both managed to get exercise in before he left for work which was great. Good food choices today so far and kids are coping ok which means I am too ;) so that is 1/7 for exercise so far this week
-
Poor DH Meagan. My lovely lunches out will cease now as most of my friends are back at work.
Well done folks. Keep it up and keep reporting. Your Mum is an inspiration Chelsea. I have to watch my diet really carefully as even thinking about food puts weight on. (well it seems like that). I have put on 3 kg since I lost 30kg years ago. I still want to lose that 3kg, but it won't budge. I'll get there, it's just a matter of perseverance.
-
I love this thread as it shows that many struggle with their weight. especially those of us who love to cook. I am aiming to lose 1k a week, walk 10,000 steps a day and count the calories of every thing I eat. This suits me as I can put my energy into creating recipes and using the TMX. Meagan keep up the reporting as it is interesting so see how others cope. Chelsea you have done really well because eating out and being away from home can be quite a challenge. I will continue to watch with interest and admiration.
-
I'm being a cranky-pants tonight as I have strained a muscle in my leg and am hobbling around. Just when I get myself motivated and into a good exercise routine!!! Off for a massage ASAP - ouch. >:(
I hope everyone else is going better. :)
-
Lunch was rice thins win avo cucumber etc as the other day, went out to run errands resulting in the kids losing the plot, another when we got home two teaspoons of loving earth coconut chocolate butter ( this was a controlled tasting as I was being driven completely up the wall by the kids and this is when o would normally eat anything in sight :-)) ) I made spagetti for tea but made myself a huge salad and had only a small portion of pasta, when I would normally just have. Huge bowl of pasta. Done well today :) I am sure we will all be better in a week or so when we are back into the 'DH being back at work' routine.
-
What a great thread - great to hear of everyones progress , ideas and tips. It's interesting that the time my weight blew out was when I started my first job and I began eating lunches from a deli every day (plus a chocolate bar and other rubbish). At this point in my life I was a gym junky, working out and doing aerobic classes 5-7 times a week (sometimes I'd even do a double class :o :o). For me it was processed foods that tipped me over. I got back on track by going back to what my Mum had always advocated and that was wholefood eating. I still love excercising and at 40+ find that my interest in the gym junky lifestyle has gone. Last year I had a nagging knee injury which made me reluctant to excercise (yoga x1 per week and walking a few times per week was what I managed), I didn't change my eating habits and yet my weight stayed the same (although my muscle tone did suffer the wobblies). I don't weight myself anymore as it became an obsession after I had my babies and found my moods being dictrated by the number I saw on the scale. I love Cyndi's philosophy and in her 21 day program she has you fill out a 'health' log rating yourself for moods, tolerance for others, sleeping, energy and clothes comfort. It really helps you to see which foods work best for you and which ones may be a good idea to avoid. I think the biggest challenge for anyone trying to lose weight/get healthy is time and the fact that not one thing is ever going to fit everyone - we are all individuals and our bodies all work differently.
-
I made spagetti for tea but made myself a huge salad and had only a small portion of pasta, when I would normally just have. Huge bowl of pasta.
That's what I often do too. It saves cooking another meal for myself and is a good habit to get into. I serve myself a small serve of what the family are having and have a salad or steamed veg with it. Actually today I decided that we will all have a coleslaw filled lettuce cup on the side with our pasta and creamy zucchini sauce for dinner. I figured we could all do with the extra veg on pasta night. :)
-
Great idea Chelsea :) the salad was actually for DH and I but I should get the boys to go for it too. How is the leg?
I rode solo today and have done really well :) with food. Cada and yoghurt with berries for bfast, didn't have sweet slice at Playgroup or a cuppa, couple of handfuls of home air popped popcorn with paprika and salt on it and some carrot sticks from the kids table. Not sure what we will have for dinner.
-

My leg is feeling much better today Meagan thanks. I even went for a tentative little walk earlier. DH rubbed it down last night (bless him) and although it was painful it seemed to do the trick.
Today was a good day here food wise. I am on a big high from the kids eating coleslaw in lettuce cups with their pasta for dinner. Wonders will never cease!!! I did sneak in two squares of organic chocolate that the boys were having for a little afternoon tea treat. I am getting very good at stopping after a mouthful though. Denying myself sweet treats doesn't work in the long term for me, but I am surprisingly happy if I can have little tastes of things. :)
-
Short walk this morning. DS 2 woke early so there was no easy way to get out the door for a proper stint. Better than nothing :-\ ok day for food. Had a friend over and made biscuits which were really a challenge to resist!! I did do a fruit plate too which helped. Ok for the rest of the day.
DS 1 starts kindy tomorrow so I am a little nervous about that of course.
-
Good luck tomorrow Meagan. Our eldest starts Kinder in 2 weeks. :'( :'(
My leg is almost completely better so I am back to power walking each morning. I am celebrating reaching my first goal today - losing 5kg. Hooray! I was going to try to loose 7kg, but I am pretty happy with 5kg for now. I am now wearing all of my smaller sized clothes that until recently lived in a box in the top of my wardrobe. I'm still not a skinny-minny by any stretch of the imagination but am back wearing mainly size 12's so that is fine with me.
I now have the difficult task of maintaining my weight. I know that my power walking is limited to the warmer weather (which is a bit scarce in Tassie) and I need to find something indoors for the winter months ahead. I also know that baking too much will cause me to come unstuck. I baked a cake yesterday with the boys (our first cake in weeks) and really struggled to limit myself to one reasonable slice. I sent the remaining 2/3 of the cake to work with DH today so that I didn't pick at it all day. I am not overly tempted by basic biscuits and slices so I will stick to those in the future and limit cakes and desserts to once a week (perhaps fortnight) or on special occasions. :)
-
Well done on your weight loss Chelsea - 5 kg is a terrific amount to lose. 8) 8)
I am a bit of a fair-weather walker so last year bought a Wii Fit machine and I have been trying to do half an hour on it at least 3 times a week over the winter. It's quite good fun to use and it monitors your progress.
-
Funnily enough, I have just been thinking much the same thing myself the last couple of days.
I would love to lose weight am also a vege but live with carnivores!!
-
Bike ride with DS1 this morning. My knees are sore :( DH reckons it is just my body getting used to exercising again!! All the same they hurt. Pretty good food wise today although I have been making jam and have had a fair bit of tasting this afternoon/evening.
Slightly off topic DS1 started kindy today and I was so proud ;D he was great and didn't get upset at all!
-
Meagan, you might have a bit of arthritis in your knees. I tried riding a bike to keep fit a few years ago and after the first few times my knees played up to the point it was impossible to ride far at all so that was the end of my trying to keep fit that way.
I may not have gotten involved with this thread but I have been keeping an eye on what you girls are up to here. It's got to the stage where I feel guilty because I am not dieting or exercising and whereas I don't have a lot of time to look after myself, I realise I cannot look after others if I am not fit and healthy myself. I will therefore try and do something, however small, to boost my energy levels a little - even if it means walking around the back yard. If only it wasn't so darn hot. Maybe that will help me sleep better too - I did try to have an early tonight but after a couple of hour's sleep here I am, wide awake and on the forum :-)) :-))
-
Poor Judy - I'm sorry to hear you're not sleeping because of the heat but at least you're making good use of your time by coming on here. ;) ;) It's bitterly cold outside at the moment (a biting wind) but I think I'd rather have that than your heat.
Please don't feel guilty about not dieting or exercising - each person is different and has different demands on their time, energy and resources and you probably use up a lot of calories looking after DH and chasing after grandchildren so don't be hard on yourself.
Look after yourself, that's the most important thing :-* :-*
-
Judy at a certain age as long as everything is working ok and we're reasonably healthy I think our body shape isn't quite so important. We just need to eat healthily. I find that my middle is expanding-it's driving me mad. No weight gain just an expansion around the middle. I guess it's called middle aged spread. :'( :'( :'(
Meagan how were you at Kindy? I'm so pleased your son went well. It's very hard for the Mums if their child is upset, but believe me they really do settle after a bit and enjoy their day.
-

I did all my crying thinking about it and in the lead up rather than on the day cookie ;) thank goodness!! I am such a 'cry at the drop of a hat' sort of person. I was surprised at how strong I was ;D
As for today, ds2 had croup over night and that meant not such a great sleep for me. So no exercise, feel like I have been snacking all day and those biscuits I made a few days ago have been my downfall today :-\ anyway can't change much now just need to pick up and start right with dinner tonight!

I have just finished reading "Why we get fat and what you can do about it" by a science journo named Gary Taubes. This book is an idiots guide to his larger book (600+ pages) called "Good Calories, Bad Calories". His central thesis is that we have been brain-washed into believing the best diet is high carb and low fat and THIS is what has made us fat. I suppose his ideas can be seen as controversial given most dieticians and health professionals would advocate this type of diet, however, the evidence that he presents to support his argument is almost overwhelming.
In short what makes us fat is carbohydrates (which drive up insulin levels) which in turn causes the body to store fat. And when he says carbs, he means all carbs - including whole grains and fruit. If you want to lose weight he says you need to cut this stuff out of your diet and eat protein, fats and vegetables.
Has anyone tried this? I'm sure there are some who have tried a low/no carb diet out there - how did it work for you?
And BTW there is very strong scientific evidence to show that exercise does not help people lose weight - the only real way to lose weight is through diet modification. That's not to say you shouldn't exercise of course, as there are many good reasons to, but if you are doing it purely because you think it will help you lose weight think again (says Taubes). The other thing he points out is that it is extremely difficult for overweight people to actually exercise because there energy levels are so low.
-
That sounds like an interesting read. It really is hard though to know what to eat to be healthy these days. Every book seems to recommend something different and be able to back it up with studies and evidence. The one thing that never seems to be discouraged in diets is veggies. I have been eating veggie based lunches and dinners the whole time I have been loosing weight. I don't think you can go wrong with a good mixture of veggies in your diet. They are far more nutritious than fruit - especially good old cabbage and sprouts. :o ;D

Someone just sent me this link which I thought people might find helpful....

Thanks for that Katya, some great tips, we do know them but often forget, I especially think of no. 14 chew slowly and wait 20 mins to see if you really need extra food.
-
Well I am struggling with motivation and have done 3/7 this week with exercise. Food is going well but I am still opening the fridge door on a regular basis looking for something to eat when I shouldn't be!!! Although I am not always eating something at the time so that is a step forward. Just struggling with sore knees and lower back. Kids aren't sleeping well either which doesn't help!! Speaking of sleep I must get some...........
-
Keep it up Meagan. We all have our down days and if we give in, it's even more of a struggle. At least thats what I had to tell myself at 4:45 when I had to meet my friend for a walk this morning. My healthy eating went out the window with TC Yasi. No power for a while, away from home helping out. The food offered was white bread with cold meats and sweet biscuits. I just wasn't organised enough to pack my own snacks. Now we have power and it's time to get back on track. I found that not having my regular breakfast smoothie really put me on the poor food choices track for the rest day. Yesterday was much better as I started with a smoothie and made good food choices throughout the day.
-
Sleep deprivation is just awful Meagan :'(. I know when I have been up a lot in the night all I feel like doing is comfort eating.
Be kind to yourself though. Exercising 3 times in a tough week is a great achievement and when you get some more sleep and your back and knees are feeling better I'm sure you will be feeling more motivated again. Hang in there! :-* :)
-
You ladies are just wonderful, exercising and shedding weight, especially while looking after and feeding small ones. Chelsea, to shed 5 ks. is amazing. Meagan keep with it, you will win. I have done battle this week with lots of visitors and family over the week end. Eating out is murder, so many nice things to try. Judy, you are one of the most energetic people I know, and so well organized. You look pretty trim to me, so don't go feeling guilty.
-
Thanks Sue, Chelsea and Chookie :) DH was getting up first then I was exercising but I think we need to switch it around so I can get out of the door before the boys wake up. But it also means I need to wake up at about 5am in order for us both to exercise and for DH to be able to get to work on time. Which in turn means I need to go to bed earlier. Anyway I am waffling.....
-
Thanks Chookie, you are a sweetie :-* :-* :-* . Hey, you are older than me and look at you go - don't think I could keep up with you ;D ;D
-
I am amazed by you all. I've been out heaps this last week and then went and made sweet sourdough which is really lovely. So far so good today. My danger period is from about 4.30 to dinnner.
-
I had a good day with food today and I went to a pump class with a friend tonight so a good start to the week despite the kids fighting most of the day. Not exactly a proud of my behavior as a mum day today!!
-
Not exactly a proud of my behavior as a mum day today!!
We all have those moments. ;D ;D Well done on your pump class!!! I did pump classes years ago and really enjoyed them. :)
-
Not exactly a proud of my behavior as a mum day today!!
I had a little smile to myself when I read that! That sounds like me every day at the moment! Every night I go to bed thinking 'ok, tomorrow I WILL be the Mum that I want to be and that cranky short tempered one will not make an appearance.'
Good effort on your lifestyle changes. I need to find the time to do something for me, that is my problem. Sounds like you are enjoying your exercise time-outs, great going!
-
So far, I haven't contributed to this thread, but I think it's time I did.
I've been trying to eat more whole foods and have found that substituting 1/3 wholemeal flour for white flour in cake recipes works well. I'm also substituting agave and rapadura for sugar.
I've always been thin but have gained a few kilos due to menopause.
I did a lot of walking when on holidays by the beach and have done nothing since!! So, I'm working on that!!
The thing I find works best is your attitude. I always 'think thin'. I compare myself to larger people and congratulate myself, rather than beating myself up if I've gained a little.
-
Pretty good day for food, no formal exercise although I walked to school and back to drop off ds1 at kindy and did some trampoline jumping with the kids in the afternoon. Feeling muscles I forgot existed from the pump class last night :o lol
;) better 'mum' day today too!
-
Meagan I look forward to your daily input here. Keep at it. :D
-
Decided to weight myself this morning, haven't done it for ages. I am only 2 kgs heavier than what I was before the TMX came into the house over 2 years ago and encouraged me to eat a lot more desserts, cakes and bread than I ever used to so guess I can't complain about that. Yesterday I walked quite some distance pushing GS in a stroller - cannot motivated myself to walk alone. Must say this is the best I have felt since my op way back in Oct '09. I like this thread, it keeps me aware of the fact that we must look after ourselves - thanks Meagan and others contributing.
-
I'm still power walking each morning, but it is starting to get a little chilly. I am probably walking faster now trying to keep warm though. Food wise I am going pretty well and am allowing myself a few more treats now that I've reached my goal. I am still not snacking at all between meals but am enjoying having something sweet after dinner. I feel like I am walking a fine line at the moment. I don't want to loose any more weight, but don't want to gain weight either. "Maintenance" was so much easier when I did Weight Watchers years ago - it was all spelled out for me. It's about balance now I guess. :)
-
Congratulations Chelsea on reaching your goal! I still haven't gotten around to taking those measurements yet and refuse to get on the scales until my clothes are fitting better.
Am trying to settle the kids into school and myself into a routine but I won't start uni for another month so I feel like i'm "waiting". I am trying to walk the kids to school each day and walk the dog too and this is as much exercise as I have been able to fit in.
As for eating, I have been going through a stage where I can't face breakfast. Am forcing myself to eat something though. I am pretty proud of our evening meals as we are being so much more sensible and eating so much better. We had KFC Coated chicken tonight and I cooked extra so that there would be some for lunch tomorrow, and managed to convince DH not to go for a second helping.
Small steps.
-
Not a good day for me food wise. We had dinner guests and enjoyed pizza, risotto, homemade ice cream etc. I did have small portions which I guess must count for something. I got in a powerwalk this morning, but the rain has settled in now. No walking tomorrow - hopefully on Saturday!
-
Busy couple of days........good for food. No exercise other than walking to school and back today. My knees are really hurting, I think that maybe pump is not the best thing for them which is a shame as it was fun and I could feel my muscles burning lol. Planning a walk tomorrow so must go to sleep.
-
Walk this morning, followed by a really full day of shopping and errand running. Reasonable food although dinner tipped me over......two shandies and bacon and toast for dinner :-[ :-\ lol
-
I have done fairly well this weekend ;D food wise although no exercise. I am a bit worried about my knees and am going to go to the doctors to get it checked out this week. I think you might be right about arthritits JD ??? I am hoping it doesn't mean I will need to learn how to swim a lot stronger than I can. I am terrible at laps. Anyway I am hesitant to ride the bike at the moment until I see a doctor about them. They are really sore and I can't put weight on them when I kneel down which cant be a good sign. I am planning on walking in the mornings which won't burn as much as riding but at least is something.
-
Meagan - have you investigated the use of Nordic Poles for walking? My physio recommended them to me as I have back and leg problems which affect my mobility and they've been amazing. They take some of the strain, help propel you forwards and also make the exercise more aerobic as you are using your arms as well as your legs. Apparently you use almost double the energy to walk with poles than without...
-
No but I will look into it Katya thanks
-
Hope things are ok Meagan. DD walks up and down 10 flights of stairs at work (quicker than the lift apparently) and she has done something to her knee. Fortunately she works where she can get it examined for free.
This morning I decided to go for a walk as it was fairly cool. I was really good until the warmer weather came. It's amazing how good it makes you feel. I walk for about 30 minutes, but hate doing it when it is hot and I WON'T get up before 6.30 to do it. Retirement must have some advantages.
-
We're both fair-weather walkers Cookie.... but you prefer not to walk when it's too hot. Chance would be a fine thing for me to avoid heat here - I just don't like walking when it's cold and wet :D :D I do envy you your climate but guess I'd find something to complain about if I had to live it 24/7
-
Very true Katya. We set out this morning at 7.20am. Blue skies. We had gone about half a kilometre and DH said he felt hot and I felt really hot. We had hats and sunglasses on. We decided that it would be a short walk, I felt guilty but I felt hotter.!
-
ATM best time is before 7 I reckon...
-
We have taken on a dog so I'm walking everyday now, well nearly everyday, can't do Wednesdays. :D
-
I haven't been walking the past couple of days. I have been tired and needing the extra time in bed. I might get back into it tomorrow. I know how you feel about the weather Cookie. It is awful walking in the heat with the sun beating down on you. We don't get many days like it down here in Tassie, but I tend to stay indoors when we do. :)
-
Lucky dog CC, expect that sad look on Wednesdays that dogs give you when they miss out on their walk though :( :(
-
I agree CP63. You do need to walk before 7. I usually manage to drag myself out of bed about then. I'm really feeling the heat at the moment. I don't know why. Perhaps it is a little more humid than it has been.(perhaps it's my age :'() We have aircon but I try not to turn it on too early or if I am going out. Perhaps I should choose a couple of movies and go and freeze at the movies.
Roll on the cooler weather.
-
It isn't you cookie it has been damn hot lately in the mornings!!!
-
Walked laps at the pool tonight ;D DH was happy to put the boys to bed so I went before they went to sleep. Really needed some time out after a long day today. Food was pretty good today. Still haven't made it to the GP yet hopefully some time this week :-))
-
I'm enjoying reading these updates. Didn't walk again. I am trying to be good in the food stakes to silently support you all.
-
Hi Meagan
I hope your knees are feeling better. I use to love pump classes, but gave it away because I found it too taxing on my body. DH says that doing any squats or lunges with weights is very tricky to get right and really (if your knees are a bit prone too injury) should only be undertaken with supervision (from a sports physio or an excercise physiologist). The problem is if you don't have your knees tracking over your ankles and your back straight you put way too much pressure on all the ligamets and muscles around your knee joint and it can be very easy to hurt yourself. Another wonderful excercise is yoga - once again yo need to find a teacher that has a deep understanding of body bio-mechanics and a teacher that is respectful of allowing you to do yoga practicing without pushing you to a point of pain. Yoga , depending on the type, can be very gentle and deeply relaxing. Once you gain an understanding of a few simple postures it's easy to do at home, so doesn't have to be expensive. I go to a class once a week and try to home practice 3-4 times. My beautiful teacher is very clear on how we need to do any lunges to protect our knees and will pull us up if she see us being sloppy and not careful.
-
Well it has been a while since I have been here :-[ I have gone a little off track. No or little exercise as the knee is still sore and I haven't made it to the GP yet :-)) I am doing the best I can food wise but have had the odd biscuit and bit of ice-cream here and there, nothing too wild though. How is everyone else going ??
-
I was wondering how you were going Meagan. I hope your knee is feeling better soon.
I have been pretty bad with food this week. Way too much chocolate! I am going to get back on track though. I am really missing my daily walk and need to get back into it. Weight wise I have now lost almost 7kg which was my original goal. My clothes are fitting really well and I am loving clothes shopping again (even if it is just op shopping ;)). It is exciting but I know the hard part for me isn't losing weight, but keeping it off long-term.
-
Well I finally made it to the GP today. Fluid on both knees as a coping mechanism by the body to protect the knees. Pump class was the likely culprit and I won't be going back!! I got a referral for a sports physician who I was lucky enough to see in the afternoon. I had a cortisone injection in the left knee to reduce the swelling and fluid build up which should work quickly *fingers crossed* and make life a little easier. I also was fitted for some orthodics. Not a cheap day out :-)) in about 3/4 weeks I am allowed to start exercising gradually. One type of exercise at a time to make sure it doesn't aggravate my knees again. If there is no improvement then I may have to have an MRI and an arthroscopy but let's hope that doesn't have to happen ;D
So back to healthy choices and maybe some sits ups and bicep work for the next few weeks ;)
-
That all sounds terrible, Meagan, I know you were sore but didn't realise it was so acute. Are you allowed to swim? Take care and look after yourself.
-
Sorry to hear that Meagan! :( That must be frustrating. Hope your knees feel better soon.
-
Take things easy Meagan and get well soon. :-*
-
Thanks :) I am ok with walking around and doing demos. They get achey but it is bending and the getting up and down from the floor that is a problem. Not easy to avoid with the children. And obviously the exercise thing at the moment. I really should have gone to the doctors sooner but life just gets in the way some times.
-
You poor love, glad you finally got to the bottom of it though Meagan - we are always the last thing on our list of things to do or fix ;) Hopefully you are now on the road to recovery albeit a slow road. Knowing what you can and can't do in regard to exercise is sometimes a problem - my DD1 bought herself one of those mini trampolines many years ago and when it did more harm than good it soon got ditched.
-
Look after yourself Meagan. :-* :)
-
Take care Meagan. I hope it gets better soon so you can at least start to exercise again. Will be able to ride again soon?
-
That's such a shame Meagan to have a knock-back when you were achieving great things. I do hope the knees don't cause you too much pain or inconvenience and they start to feel better soon....
Enjoy the rest from exercising ;) ;)
-
Thanks everyone :) my worst knee that I had the injection in is feeling much much better today ;D I am hoping once it settles down completely and the orthodics and the new shoes I intend on purchasing with them. I will be good to go again. The GP said it was fine to still walk to kindy in the mornings which will keep ds1 happy :)
-
Meagan , you poor thing, take care. DD phoned me at lunchtime today and she has seen the doctors at work and she has been told similar things. I know she has been hurting with one knee so 2 must be horrid. They put a knee strap or something on her and she said it is so hot with it on but of course the doctors will see if she takes it off. Apparently hers may be a slight tear.
Take care of your knees.
I'm not being very good. Fish and chips last night, but it was preceded by a long walk and today we went over to Simmos for a delcious icecream. I had plum pudding flavour.
-
Well I though all was well but I got my orthotics fitted on Friday and a new pair of shoes on the same day yesterday was fine and this morning but this arvo I am really sore and swollen :'( :'( I drove DH 's car ( a manual) to deliver 3tms this morning. Nothing too strenuous, so I am feeling quite despondent. I will have to go and have an MRI scan I think ( the sports physician gave me a thingy to have one done if it swelled again) I was counting down the days till I could exercise properly again :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
That's the way to go Meagan, pull out the big guns and find out what the problem is.
-
Sorry to hear that Meagan :'( Hope they can figure out the problem soon and it gets better quickly!!
-
Poor Meagan. It wouldn't be the orthotics causing too much turning or something would it? I only ask as I had a pair once that I had trouble with.
It's wise to have the MRI, then you will know what course of action to take.
-
Sorry to hear about your knockback Meagan. I hope it eases up soon.
I have orthotics in my shoes and I find that when I get a new pair, I can only wear them for a few hours to begin with as they need "breaking in". I tend to wait too long before getting the new pair so that the old ones have worn down and my legs then have to get used to walking at the positions created by the new ones.
It sounds like it's going to be worth having the MRI anyway so you know what's going on.
Good luck :-* :-*
-
Thanks lovely ladies. Had an MRI today. Will beg and plead my way into an appointment tomorrow and hopefully be up and running very soon. Well not actually running lol.
I am worse tonight, can hardly walk at all :'( :-\
-
Gee, that is horrid. You were lucky to get an MRI done today with the public holiday.
-
Yes very lucky to get in. My knee is the size of a small rock melon!! And so sore too... I am worried about being ok for Dubai....
-
I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.
-
Sending healing wishes your way Meagan
-
Same here Meagan - hope you get a quick answer that doesn't put your trip in jeopardy.
-
The more I think about it the more I think I overdid it with the orthotics. The dr told me to wear them as much as possible. I can't find the piece of paper that was in the packet which probably says to take it slowly, based on my googling :-)) :-)) :'(
-
orthotics should only been worn for a few hours to start with gradually building up to wearing them full time.
Hope your knees get better soon. It not much fun having bad knees, been there.
Ice packs help with the swelling and lots of rest, which is probably hard with little ones.
-
I hope your knee gets better soon Meagan so you can make your trip to Dubai. :)
-
* Update *
I had my knee drained this afternoon 60ml of fluid came out :-X :o and another injection of cortisone went in. I will have another injection before going to Dubai to make sure I don't experience the same thing while away. Then on return i need an arthroscopy done >:( which means Thermomix demos etc will be on hold for a bit :'( . At least I feel less pressure and can walk with one crutch.
-
Why do these things always happen when we have a big trip planned ??? Good luck with the knee Meagan, how long before the Dubai trip again?
-
Wednesday week JD. That is all going well ie if my knee responds to the cortisone injection. Otherwise I may not be able to go :( so fingers crossed. I worked so hard to get there I will be really upset if I have to miss it!!
-
We are all behind you on this one Meagan, thinking good thoughts for you so that you don't miss this once in a lifetime trip.
-

Brave of you to have the fluid drained Meagan and another cortisone injection :o Take care and rest as much as possible :-*
-
cortisone injections :o :o. I think my teeth marks are still on the Doctor's ceiling from when I had one years ago. :D :D
Hope all goes well Meagan and the cortisone does the trick. :-*
-
Cortisone hurts but gee it's a wonderful thing. I've had a couple over the years and they sure worked. Lots of rest Meagan. Tell the little ones they can be your helpers and look after you and read you stories. :D :D
-
I like your thinking Cookie ;) shame the boys are not that bit older.
Well I have had a frustrating week of trying to rest and resist doing too much. DH has been fantastic, he has looked after me and the kids at home for 2 days then worked for the last 2 days and come home in the afternoons to look after us again. He has put up with me being really grumpy and frustrated for which I think he deserves a medal!! The swelling has gone down a lot but I am still using the one crutch more to take pressure off the leg when i walk and make sure it doesnt balloon again before I leave. I am having another injection on Wednesday morning. I have a specialist appointment the day I return and will more than likely have the operation later that week. At this stage all seems well for getting on the plane so fingers crossed ;D
-
Not long now, Meagan!!! Hope your knee behaves itself! Wish I was coming... Hope you have SOOOOOO much fun!! ;D
-
Megan - have you thought about asking for wheelchair assistance at the airport? Not sure how far you have to walk to get to the plane but if you got assistance it would stop you overworking your knee before you got to Dubai...
I do hope the trip goes well and you have a wonderful time.
-
That's an excellent idea, Katya, especially if you are transiting through Bangkok for any reason - that airport is HUGE!!!
-
Thanks for the thoughts everyone ;D Perth airport is not big at all and we fly straight to Dubai.my suitcase is also one of those ones that stands up on 4 wheels so I won't have to carry it or drag it at all. I am still using one crutch, more as a support for my weight when walking on the left foot. The cortisone seems to have done the trick but I am going to use the crutch whilst away, as obviously I still have the damage inside the knee. I have another shot tomorrow morning and that will hopefully ensure it stays down whilst away. so I am off on the plane tomorrow night eeeek ;) ;D I really must pack my bags !!
-
Bon Voyage and have a wonderful time.
-
Enjoy yourself Meagan - can't wait to hear all about it. Hope all goes well for you.
-
Meagan have a great trip!! Hope the knee behaves, just remember not to over do it.
-
Have a good trip to Dubai Meagan, looking forward to hearing all about it. :)
-
Have a great trip Meagan. Take care of yourself.
-
I'm trying really hard to get my boys (5 and nearly 3) to stop wanting so many processed bars (milo bars, lcms, etc.) so have started making them myself since getting tmx.
-
Persevere, Penji. If they want the sweet snacks badly enough they'll come around to good home made alternatives and, when their taste buds adapt to the home made treats they will not crave the additives in the commercial cr**. You will have to be strong when you are shopping with them, though, and not let them talk you into buying the sweets off the shelves (and especially those placed at child height whilst you wait at the check out)
-
Bump
I'd like to start eating healthier foods and slowly make small changes that i can hopefully keep at in the long run. I might have another go at cyndino'meara's healthy weight loss as last time christmas got in the way.
-
I haven't forgotten about this thread lol. My knee is still not 100% so I am doing a 20 min stretch ab and upper body work out in the mornings but am unable to do high cardio stuff until given the all clear with my knee. So I am trying to watch portion sizes etc.
-
Meagan I didn't realise you were still having problems with it. That's over 12 months now, must be driving you crazy!
-
Meagan I know what it's like to have a long term problem like your knee. I have had Achilles tendonitis in my left foot for almost 2.5 years after I did a 10 klm walk/run, and because of limping for so long I now have tendinitis in the right Achilles as well for the last 6 months. Fun. I have been to physio, specialist and paid top dollar for the best shoes but no relief as yet. I'm booked in to see a surgeon in march which I had to wait 6 months for an appointment. I have a feeling that they won't do anything and I will have to just put up with it as is or until I rupture the tendon (I hope that dosnt happen)
Have you had anything done to your knee Meagan?
-
Gosh Meagan that isn't good. I've come to realise knees are not fun to hurt. DD still doesn't have full use of hers from her fall ages ago and of course the doctor won't sign off on it until she does.
I do hope yours comes good eventually Meagan.
-
Yes I had an arthroscopy last year after the conference in Dubai. But it kept swelling/filling with fluid which made bending it really hard as the joint was tight. I had a drain and cortisone injection before christmas and then another injection in Jan. I have to wait now until the start of March to see if it swells again. If I start doing exercise that involves my knee now then the Dr can't tell if it is the exercise or just any underlying problem that is making it swell. it is pretty frustrating as I had decided to work really hard at dropping some kgs last year but wasn't able to do the hard yards. I have lost a bit but need to up the calorie burning to lose more.
