Well it's taken a couple of days of reading to catch up on all the posts.  Although I haven't been posting I've been still watching my budget.  It totally blow out in July as I had 2 family birthday parties, one of them I catered for 36 adults/kids and the other 10 adults plus kids.  In total I blow the budget by $400.00 for the month.  Not too bad considering.

August back on track and keeping to $100.00 a week, that includes all food, pet food, nappies, non food grocery stuff so pretty pleased.

Can any one tell me, can you freeze sour cream?  A friend has given me 5 litres of milk and 2 litres of sour cream which will be at it's used by date in 5 days.

TIA

Kieramax & Uni, I found this comment on the net regarding feeezing sour cream. Uni, what has your experience with it been like?

"I often get asked, Can you freeze sour cream? The answer is Yes and No. I know that sounds funny but YES you can freeze it. Will it be as good as if it had never been frozen? NO!  However, it really depends on how you plan to use it.  I personally do not freeze it however it can be done.

By freezing you can extend the life by 4 to 6 months. Just write the date you put it into the freezer with a permanent marker so you know how long it has been there.

Sour Cream – You can freeze it in the original container or an air-tight container however by freezing IT WILL affect the texture. It will turn it into the consistency of cottage cheese. So if you are going to use it for baking then it would be ok but if you are using it in its original form then I would not recommend it.

Also, another helpful tip is that you can extend the life of your sour cream by storing the unopened container upside down in your fridge"

Thanks Uni and Judy, will freeze and see how I go.  Can always add it to cooking etc.  My friend has another 6 litres to get rid of so I've told her I'll have them is she can't find homes.

Maybe the sour cream can be whizzed up in TMX to get the texture right again. Would be interesting to try.  I have made butter successfully from frozen thawed plain cream.

Couldn't image her with a cow.  Her husband works in a distribution warehouse for cold goods milk, cheese etc and they get goods close to the use by date.

Will look at the sour cream loaf.  I've also got a few recipes for sour cream cakes that can go into the freezer

That would make sense, as they couldn't sell it to shops with not much use by date left.. :)

Spent $45 yesterday for the week. Yeah.... :)

Didn't have the best of weeks. $278.85. That brings my weekly average to $117.11.

Will have to try and do better this week. It is expensive stocking up the freezer again.
