Hi all,

Will, I've wanted a thermomix for years - more than four, actually.  And in all that time, I have never seen it in the flesh!!!! But, with two young children, and the interest free offer, I decided to bite the bullet and get it - because although now is the time in my life when I am least able to affOrd it, it is also the time when I feel I am going to get the best use out of it.

I'm excited and nervous! I live two hours from my consultant, so the thermie will be delivered to me without a demo just yet! I hate having any food failures, and having them in my whizz bang new expensive thermomix will be gut wrenching, so I've been trying to plan my beginning recipes for maximum probability of success, but it is so hard because everything has such mixed reports.

 

I thought I'd just follow the EDC cookbook (does it come with every thermomix purchase, or since I'm getting the Christmas festive flavour one does that mean I don't get the EDC?), but there are people who seem to hate the recipes from the EDC.  I thought I'd try some Internet recipes I have found here and elsewhere, but there is that lottery feel again.

So, here I am, washed, about to dry and reassemble and have a little play while kids sleeping, but will be slightly limited by lack of recent shopping = not much in fridge or cupboard

That is  the most sensible  thing I have heard from a new owner.  The EDC is fine for beginners and has all the basics. You will find recipes that are tried and tested on the forum. That is the secret. Tried and tested and tweaked. Tenina the ThermoMixtress is the go to  person for masterful recipes.

We have other gurus here and you will have no trouble seeking them out.

Hi lozzy and welcome. Relax and have fun lots of recipes here and tweaks if EDC ones too. I like to check the thread for recipe tweaks before I cook from EDC.

Hi there . .Can only agree with Gert - yours in the most clear thinking approach!!  You're right - with two youngsters now is the time - and the TMX will eventually pay for itself  - moneywise, timewise and healthwise! 

Welcome to the forum - a unique place of caring and sharing . . . you'll learn heaps here and not just about using the TMX.    If you have any problems, questions, requests, etc etc etc . . just pop them on here and bob's your uncle - you'll have answers within a very short space of time.  We all look forward to sharing your TMX (and other!) experiences!

Hi Lozzy! I am a newbie, too. I just got mine a week ago. In fact, I am new to cooking! I understand how you feel, having a fancy new machine you expect every dish to turn out perfect. To be honest, I have had lots of successes this past week, but also had a few disasters!

That really boils down to my inability to read instructions properly and my lack of experience in cooking means I don't possess the simple logic most do and as a result I struggle with the simples recipes.

But I must say the kitchen disasters have not dampened my enthusiasm because cooking has never been this easy and mess free! I love cooking with my Thermie, "the one stop pot" or "cooking by numbers",  and it really does get easier and more intuitive with every dish (for instance, my first risotto was a salty, gluggy mess but my second one was perfection).

Welcome and good luck on your first few dishes with your new baby. Keep us posted with your cooking and discoveries!

Hi lozzy, welcome to the forum. 10/10 for your introduction message    To be honest I didn't have much success with the EDC and it wasn't until I found this forum that I began to cook a decent meal.  This is a great list to start with, many of us have done a lot of these recipes and it has to be good to be on CP's list of favourites.
ThermieLove's posting was a good one for a newbie and the point taken from it is something we have all learnt - read the recipe carefully and then read it again   Many a meal is ruined by not doing exactly what the recipe says.  Good luck with your new machine and remember we are here for you if you get into trouble or just want to ask a question as all newbies do (and some oldies as well).

Awwwww thank you all sooooo much for such a warm welcome!!!

After posting, I couldn't wait, figured flour was cheap enough and plentiful, the chooks have given me a few eggs, and thermie desperately wanted to be christened, so I cracked in to the EDC custard (page155) - slightly tweaked by guess work by me (+ 1 egg, vanilla essence only, ^milk).

Yay!!! Success!! Tastes good, a tad floury flavour, but still tasty as!

Now, I will go check some of the links and members you've suggested to see if I can scrounge up ingredients for something savoury before I go to bed

Good luck Lozzy, sounds like you will be fine once you work out what you can and can't make. What about some biscuits for the kids, or a cake. Nice and easy to start with.
I bet you will be off to the shop tomorrow to buy some ingredients so you can whip up a few items tomorrow

Nice to see you are away Lozzy, custard is always a good one to start with.  Now you can move onto Chookie's no-fuss rolls on the forum - have a go if you have some bread flour, they are so easy.

Haven't made anything else yet - severe dearth of ingredients for a savoury. Will make a veggie risotto for me and a beef strong for hubby and kids after shop tomorrow I reckon

I'm a newbie too - had mine for two and a half weeks now, after wanting it for four and a half years!! It's really brought back my enthusiasm for cooking - just finding meals to cook night after night was a bit of a drag, but no more!

I have a 3 and a 5 year old and they are loving it too. Even baking is more fun (and we loved it to start with) - so quick to mix up cookie dough etc, which so suits their attention spans 

I have actually made quite a few recipes straight from the EDC and it's been pretty successful so far.  But also lots of recipes from here or online.
