Has anyone noticed lately that Coles seems to be reducing prices on its own brand name stuff? Clever ploy, as there own no name stuff is not as expensive to produce, so can afford to 'lower' prices.

When I see the large stores lowering prices, I just think how much they must have been ripping us off before.

Yes its shockingcookie. Some nice old lady was telling me how upset she was that some items came in home brand only, we looked for her products but could only find home brand. She saud she would try somewhere else. Good on her

I just want to have the choice. I hate it when the only option is a home brand. I am not loyal to home brands but I am to name brands that I like and trust the quality but they keep disappearing.

I totally agree. I prefer to shop at Foodland where I still get a choice of local brands, and at my local growers market.

they make more money out of their branded stuff.

The way I see it is that the home brand stuff is more likely to be the branded stuff "under cover". The brand companies are still making money by selling onto the supermarkets for generic branding. If they can afford to produce it and sell it cheaper - why don't they? They are banking on people being loyal to the brands, and those who don't think that generic brands are as good. A lot of the generic stuff is locally produced in Australia. If home brand is cheaper and just as good, I know which one I take off the shelf

Many years ago I worked with a man whose son worked for Anchor foods. Anchor foods produced the Black and gold brad cordial as well as the Anchor brand. He reckoned that when they were making the black and gold brand cordial the percentage of water increased while the percentage of flavouring/sugar decreased. So while it was cheaper you had to use more to achieve the same strength of flavour.
