Meatless Balls

Meatless Balls

Converted from Revive Cafe Cookbook - a cafe in Auckland

Make approx 72 small balls

INGREDIENTS

2 large potatoes, cooked and mashed
70g carrot
4 cloves of garlic
1 large onion
2tsp rice bran oil
180g of rolled oats
1tsp dry mixed herbs
125mls soy sauce/tamari
1/2 cup besan flour or wholemeal flour
Soy/rice milk as needed (approx 60mls)
4 cups of your favourite Italian tomato sauce
Spaghetti to serve
 

METHOD
1. Chop carrot Speed 5 for 4 seconds - set aside
2. Place garlic in  *: speed 6 for 5 seconds
3. Add onion to  *: speed 6 for 5 seconds
4. Add all other ingredients except milk, tomato sauce and spaghetti
5. Bring the ingredients together speed 6 for 10-12 seconds.
6. Check mixture and add milk accordingly - it is a moist mix.
7. Using a scoop (as it is a loose, wet texture I don't know how you would form the balls without a scoop) form balls and place on a tray lined with baking paper and lithly sprayed with oil.
8. Place in 160 oven for 40 minutes or until cooked through.
9. Cover the balls with tomato sauce and serve on rice or spaghetti.

It sounds an interesting recipe Michele, are you turning vegetarian?

I was raised vegetarian and DH and I have at least 3 vegie meals a week. This recipe is vegan too but I'm not vegan.

Thanks Michelle ... We try to have a couple of vegetarian meals a week here too (good for the food balance I say) Think I will be able to sneak this one past the family with out too many dramas (perhaps when it cools down a little!!)

Looks interesting, Michelle.  Did the balls hold together after they were cooked?  How did they taste?

No problem, firmed up and held together really well. Tasted pretty good. I ate 4 without the sauce  :D

I love the sound of these Michele. We try to have at least one meal a week that isn't meat of some sort.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

This looks great Michele and a must try meal as DH and I have 3 vegetarian dinners each week.
We both did the whole vegetarian thing for 3 years a while back but missed our meat , poultry and fish.
It's now a good balance although we have over indulged in the last couple of weeks.  ;)

Sounds easy recipe, thanks for converting, I am going to check out that recipe book, but its to hot here in Albany WA to try recipe yet  :)

Sweet potato would work fine (it's lower GI than regular potato too). Next time because we eat eggs I will add an egg and reduce the liquid.

I made these yesterday and my DH wondered if we added an egg (or two) to bind them, and perhaps some breadcrumbs, could they then be boiled, instead of going into the oven?  What do you think?
