Our Freezer is Dead. Ideas please?
« on: May 03, 2013, 12:36:05 am »
This morning we got up to find that our freezer has died. The icecream seemed soft last night but I didn't think much of it as I have been loading the freezer with food to take away. So this morning we have had to take all the food out and find new homes for it. (
Gotta love friends and neighbours). As we are going away on Monday we need to urgently buy a new freezer. The one that is dead is a Fisher and Pykel and is half of a matching pair. It is almost 9 years old and I thought it would last better than that.

Does anyone have any suggestions re a new freezer please? We want an upright one. Thanks.  :D :D

We have been inundated with brochures lately Cookie. All with sales happening.
I have a Lemair (don't know if they still exist) it is 12 years old and hasn't missed a beat.
Disappointing that the F&P has broken down after only 9 years. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that Cookie we were looking about a year ago but found the upright freezers quite expensive so we bought a fridge freezer instead.

Have you had a chance to check out Choice magazine?  I don't get it any more so don't know when they did their last freezer report, but might worth taking a bit of time to have a look.

Good luck.

don't buy a whirlpool :o :o :o

There customer service and warranty are crap.

One of our fridges died and it took 4 weeks to get a fuse, after many phone calls to a overseas call center, then to management in melbourne.

any other brand but them.. We have LG's

Chookie, I always steered clear of FP because of what people had told me about the life of them.  I bought a Westinghouse upright and although it is not that old, that brand is my preferred brand of fridge and freezer.

Sorry to hear that Cookie.  We have a pair of FP, hope they don't die soon.  Have a bench one,  Westinghouse, 40 years old,  still going strong.

I used to subscribe to their website, it was really handy. Now I just pay a small fee for the articles/reviews that I want, I'm sure they'd have a freezer one. I found it really helpful for microwaves.

I had a chest freezer which was full of whole beef rumps and big legs of lamb when it died.  I put ice on top of everything, shut the lid and it all lasted the 3 days until we got a new one.
I went with the Fisher & Paykel upright. Had to get the biggest one they had just to accommodate the huge lamb legs.  :-\

Thanks all. After going all round looking at freezers we have ended up with a Westinghouse. It isn't super large but it will do.
Discussing the age of the old freezer at several places they said the average is around 9 years. Some better, some worse. We had to consider that our fridge freezer space is 1290mm. We chose this freezer and have chosen the next fridge too as that is 9 years old as well.
Now to freeze it up and repackage the food

Sorry you have had freezer problems Cookie but glad you have the problem solved.  We have an upright F&P with drawers about 8 years old so will keep an eye on it.  We had a Westinghouse Fridge/Freezer 8 years old and had to replace that.  The chap at the shop said that if you get 8-10 years you are doing well and here was silly me thinking that if we purchased new appliances when we first retired they would see us out.  So far in 10 years we have replaced the heat pump, fridge/freezer, microwave/convection oven  and washing machine although I did bring that one with me and it was almost 18 years old when we had to replace that.  That was a good effort.  I will now wait and watch the freezer.
Enjoy you trip
