Mine never has Deb, I usually let it go an hour then pop it in the freezer and it is rarely too stiff by then.  Mind you I rarely ever leave my custard base in the fridge overnight to really chill, very impatient here to get it churned.  Do the instructions tell you that yours will turn off if it gets too thick or the machine overheats?  Mine has the safety feature which automatically stops the unit if the motor overheats and this system may activate under heavy loads if the unit has been running for an excessively long period of time.

Mine does not turn off either Deb or at least I don't think it does. I usually under set the time if that makes sense.    The Sunbeam machine I had before the Cuisinart did not turn itself off,  it tried to go in reverse when it got too thick.  I usually set mine for about 40 minutes and when it gets close to the time I watch it and if it appears to start struggling or if I think it is thick enough I stop the machine and put the icecream in a container and then in the freezer.

I have a Sunbeam and it tries to go in reverse as Marie said. I chill my custard and then churn for about an hour. Usually the icecream is still a bit soft too eat so it goes in the freezer. I try to put alcohol in it to stop it freezing too hard. I haven't made any for ages but summer is coming up.

Thank you for your replies. I just need to watch it I think. It's pretty quiet really. I need to ring them though because in one spot in the book it says to fill to 60% and then another spot 80% hmmmmm

The chocolate ice cream was a hit with my 4 yo. He said deeeeeeeeelicious ! He loved licking the paddle. Should have got a photo ! I was going to do JulieO's recipe but when I realised the eggs wouldn't be cooked I gave it a miss ! I don't fancy the idea of raw egg and don't want to risk it with the kids.

I made this one of Tenina's http://tenina.com/2008/06/all-scream-for-icecream/

Very yummy !

That sounds really interesting. Where did you get it from deb? What capacity does it have?
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

1.4 litre MJ and I got it from Nesbit's Catering company. I've made two lots today and they turned out well. I'm not sure about the 1.4 though, because the book says to fill to 60 and 80 %, so need to check which is correct and this could affect the capacity......... I filled the bowl with water and it takes 1.4 litres.

After purchasing one of the tovolo ice cream containers I got my ice cream machine out last night and put the bowl in the freezer and made up some chocolate mix so will be churning today and hopefully DS can have it when he comes home from school. I'm trying to use up leftover ganache I had in the fridge so melted that with cream and mixed in a little sugar and a can of condensed milk. Will see how it goes.

DJ mine is an old, relatively cheap and I don't thinnk very efficient Krups machine. It doesnt' seem to freeze the mixture very well but hopefully the churning will airate it enough and then it can go in the freezer to harden up.

So the mixture didn't freeze up at all even though it had been in the fridge all night and the bowl in the freezer for a few days. Now that I think about it some more last time I tried to make ice cream it didn't thicken either. I think it's time for the Krups machine to go in the bin. After looking at reviews online I rang the local Breville factory seconds store and they had a compressor machine there so I went and grabbed it. Looks like there will be some frozen foods this weekend.

The chocolate "custard" tasteed good so hopefully it will harden up in the freezer and DS will be happy with it.

Ohhh noo Wonder, been out all day just caught up on the forum now. I see your ice cream maker didn't work either. They might give you a brand new (non-seconds one) to replace it. That's happened to us before. Hopefully it gets sorted quickly for you.

DJ, I have been talking to Nisbet about it. Following on from the book saying fill to 60% in one place and 80% in another ............ if I fill to 80% it has ice cream underneath once you take the bowl out. On the other hand if I only fill it to 60% then it's not a 1.5ltr machine ! The ice cream is also quite soft when it comes out.  It's not freezing to the max it says in their specs. So ! they have had it picked up by courier yesterday and am waiting to hear from them ! None of the staff there know much about them at all so will be interested what they say.  Funny you asked, the day they picked it up though lol.

The process is a little frustrating really ........ if it was from one of the department stores ....... I'd take it back and just get a credit.. no drama, no waiting for them to test it etc !!

I'm kinda a thinking maybe I should have got he Cuisinart one ........ but we'll see what happens.

Oh dear....... I hope it all gets sorted, I feel kinda responsible for this very sticky mess.
Fingers crossed and good vibes from afar for good news soon.
Thanks for letting me know.

No, no no DJ ! Don't feel responsible, it's not your fault. The devil made me buy it lol.  I've realised though, DH packed it up and we didn't' include everything in the box. There's a spatula and measuring cup etc.  Will let you know what they say.
