It might be worthwhile to buy one as an "investment" even if you don't have kids, especially if production is limited.  Hold on to one long enough and it will become a collectors item. 

I have a collection of Sunbeam mixers, all models from the first to the late '50s(Model 12), including the "toy" Sunbeam Mixmaster. 
The toy is by far the most desirable collectible and they sell for incredible amounts when they show up on ebay.

Sunbeam in Australia produced some exceptional kitchen machines, some unusual colors also desired by collectors here in the US.

I'm a member of WACEM (We Actually Collect Electric Mixers)  and every time a toy shows up on ebay there is avid interest.

I bought my toy back in the '60s for $35.00, when it was already 30 years old, and can easily get ten times that amount now as I also have all the accessories for it.

I have a pink, jadeite green and white sunbeam mixers from the 50's.  I agree with you, I love their classic design.  I chose to stop adding to the collection....only because of the  lack of space to display them! 
I can see why it's so addictive to collect them.

LOL - there was one for sale in Portugal and I am sure the person who purchased it didn't realise that it was a toy.  They were probably from UK or USA, or even Australia.  It sold for something like $400.

I have waaaaay too many, including some really big early Kitchenaids that also weigh a ton, however some of them are on loan to a museum that is setting up rooms showing authentic kitchens of various eras - 1915, 1920s, 1930s, etc.  They were supposed to have the exhibit open last October but funding problems has delayed it for the time being.  As long as they keep paying the insurance, I don't mind, but it would be nice to see how they look in a full display.

I recognised Mum's in that lot Andie - the Sunbeam Model 9. Heaven knows where that is now, must ask her what she did with it.

I've had people come to my house and see some of my oldies and begin weeping because one of my old machines was just like grandma's or mom's or aunt so and so.   
The toasters get a lot of attention but the ones that really seem to grab people's emotions are the mixers, especially the Sunbeams.
It seems that everyone's grandma had one and make cakes that evoke wonderful memories.
