I used this recipe today for the first time to make a loaf of bread,had fantastic results.Thanks Chookie for a wonderful recipe. :-*

I've yet to make it as a loaf CC, must try it.  It certainly is an easy, failproof recipe and a good one for people to try who are starting off making their own bread or rolls.

I have been making this recipe for a while,  always with a few changes
The best so far
 
1 cup wholemeal flour and the rest of the weight in white flour
Whey as a replacement for water
Honey as a replacement for sugar
And 1 teaspoon of bread improver

Sometimes I will soak ½ cup of dried fruit in milk for ½ hour the add to it

DH gives it 10/10
i don't need a recipe i'm italian

I have made this bread today, I am not sure where I went wrong but it hasn't risen much and it is quite dense, so a heavy texture to this bread.

I made the cobb loaf on this site - that was perfect.

Also made the focacia from EDC that seemed good.
So I have no idea where I went wrong with this bread, I used a silicone loaf tin, it slipped out no problem, just not risen much and dense, but it is nice and crispy on top!

I don't know what went wrong for you Hally, everyone seems to have success with this recipe.  Was your water warm and not too hot?  Your yeast must be OK if you have had success with other loaves.  Did you use bakers flour?  Did it double when you left it in the bowl before you put it into your loaf container for the second rising or was it just not rising full stop?

OK - it didn't seem to rise in the TM bowl at all,  I left it for 30 mins - maybe not long enough, then I transferred it to the loaf dish and it rose to the top.

The bread was lovely toasted, so we all had it toasted with the soup.


I have another batch on - I will leave it in the TM bowl for 1 hour this time. I also added 1 tsp of bread improver this time.

I would really like to get the hang of this bread as a good loaf is nice tohave with soups for the winter and buying them at the bakers are pricey.

I will let you know how the 2nd one goes.

Forgot to say I use Lighthouse Bakers Flour - this has alwasy worked for me previously with pizza dough.

Does anyone suggest another flour to use?

I use Laucke's Wallaby Bakers Flour Hally, I think a lot of the girls do as well.  It shouldn't make that much difference though.
This time of the year the first rise may take a little longer than 30 minutes if just left sitting on the cupboard.  I tend to put the TMX bowl/dough into my bed with the electric blanket on or wrap a blanket around the TMX bowl/dough and that way it still usually only takes just over 1/2 hour in the colder months.  When it starts to push the MC off, it is ready so perhaps use that as a guide.

also mc being tipped off is a good one too

the loaf today was much better - i think I didnt give the first loaf enough time to rise

Was reading all the posts yesterday morning (as it was a Public Holiday and I had time) and decided I might give these a go.

I have just made the dough, I now have it in the jug sitting near my gas fire in the hope that it rises well. Rising was a big problem for me, so let's hope it works
