microwave still works, but its in a utility cupboard so as soon as you open the doors you can smell the smoke (and its 4 days later). Not pyrex but glass - part of a set of different size small bowls that nest inside each other - so I thought it would be ok and set the timer for 5 mins. I was sitting at the kitchen bench with DD1 watching ("Mum! don't touch it!!!) and helping to count down the clock quickly. one of those moments when you needed a man around but don't want to admit it  :-))

PS. Don't worry it wasn't as bad as it probably sounds...

CP - get a damp cloth dipped in a mixture of bi-carb and lemon and rub it over the microwave and the cabinet - more lemon than bi-carb. Will get rid of the smell  :D

I invited my mother for afternoon tea for her birthday, and wanted to make her a sponge cake as that is what her mother had always made her on her birthday. However, I stupidly decided to bake it after my morning walk and before the school/ work run as sponges are always best eaten on the day they are made. I was doing fine until the flours needed to be folded into the egg mixture, and thermie did not cope well. The air deflated, and all the flour pooled around the blades. I then cooked it for too long as I was trying to do too many things at once. The result was two very flat discs. I was going to turn them into a trifle, or turf them into the bin, but Mum told me to give one a try. I covered it in lemon curd and cream, stuck a candle in it and we all sang Happy Birthday.  As expected, it was dry, but DS said that it was just like a big biscuit, and really yummy! Kids?
