So he didn't actually notice until you mentioned it?  :D

I use yogurt instead of sour cream for dips and tacos etc.
Here's a great dip called Scoop:

250 g tub Philly Cheese
1/2 cup plain yoghurt (original recipe uses sour cream)
1/2 cup mayo

Mix together and spread into a pie plate so it's about 1 1/2 cm deep. Spread carefully with sweet chilli sauce.
Top with finely diced de-seeded tomato, cucumber, capsicum and spring onion.
Sprinkle with grated cheese.
Serve with corn chips.

Yum !
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

There is no use by date on my yoghurt because I make my own lol

Me too and it lasts much longer than the "advisory" bulletins indicate.   I keep it in the coldest area in the fridge - which reads on an accessory thermometer as two degrees above freezing as that discourages almost all harmful pathogens.  I've kept my homemade yogurt for a minimum of four weeks this way.
Commercial yogurt, with the preservatives, should keep even longer.

I don't think I've seen red mould  ??? You must have iron guts Gretch  ;D My DH has, and any food that is slightly past its useby date I tell him he can eat it. He would never know the difference, and would never get sick.

Years ago just before lunch time I cleaned the kettle with CLR, and left it on the bench. DH comes home for lunch and makes himself a cup of coffee. (I am elsewhere in the house) I walk into the room and see him drinking away and  :o :o :o ask him if he emptied the kettle at all? No. Ho hum, he ran to the sink to spit out a mouthful of coffee - he's still here, and we're still married but he is definitely suspicious that I was trying to poison him  ;D but he can basically ingest anything as well

Well,I guess CLR might work if you were having a colonoscopy  the next day!  Close one eh? :D

Hi Judy. It is already 0900 here and I have been up for hours. Had a swim before breakfast and now reading the Sat papers.  Made a great healthy drink in the TMX which included some wilted bok choy and quinoa. Feeling chipper. ;D

Well maybe not  maddy. You might not want to come to my house as If it grows red mould  I might   incorporate it  into a  chili dip.

:o. LOL......mental note, never eat chili dip at Gretch's house!

Moulds are fungi and come in many lovely colours and there are thousands of them. You only get to actually SEE the mould when they grow into colonies. Some are good moulds some are bad moulds. Some are used in food production. Some are used in food destruction. I have never seen any harm in removing a colony of mould from the top of  a container of sour cream and eating the remains. Usually that mould has grown due to cross contamination like a knife plonked in for a swipe that may have had mayo on it.

I have a  container of sour cream I bought in December before Christmas. I opened it about 3 weeks ago and it is still fine. Not even a wee bit of mould.

I never worry about use by or best before dates because I have a nose that can smell just fine, eyes that can see, though not as good as they used to, and common sense. Look in your pantry and you will no doubt find some really old bottles of stuff not to mention the herbs and spices.

Up here in the deep north I have to keep a lot of  things in the fridge to forestall the creeping fungi not to mention the pesky  evil weevils and that is why I have four refrigerators, not, as some say, to hold the grog!  Well maybe two to hold the grog! ;D

Most labels have the "best before" date on them as its the law to do so.  A lot of the stuff will last a lot longer than the "use by" date.

You kind of get to know when stuff has gone over IMHO - lots of stuff will last ages past.

Freeze it in ice cube trays Hally for smoothies and instant ice reams!

I like this idea, or strain the yoghurt and make labne.

I must agree about using things after the use by date. DD goes off her brain about it but once more what she doesn't know won't hurt her. (hopefully) I made icecream with old yoghurt and old cream yesterday. They both smelled and tasted fine. I love it when the supermarket puts soft cheeses out near the use by, I buy them up as they are just ready for eating.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

I like to buy that cheese and leave them a month until they are runny!

Yum.

:)Gertbysea, we have 3 fridges too, because of the weevils, lots of things we have to store in the fridge too.

Its  hot today 32, great for growing mould.

best before dates are a great way for food companies to make money. It makes most people throw out stuff that's ok, and buy more.
