DH did ask "who's Herman" when I asked him to start taking photos for me,he was a bit surprised that it was just cake batter but the family know I'm a bit mad anyway :D :D

I've only just read this thread. How amazing. I haven't heard of a friendship cake - such a lovely idea.

Well I've started. It doesn't look quite the same as yours CC. I have about 700mls of mixture.
And it's OK to leave it out on the bench with the milk added. The weather is still quite warm here.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself a bit here. The three batches I give away to friends and they go through the 9 days of feeding - won't they have double the mixture at the end? Will it then have to be divided into eight portions?

It looks like my first picture Michele.Just cover your Herman lightly with cling film or a lid and leave it on your kitchen worktop.You need warmth for your Herman starter to get working.My Herman is sitting in a warm place  ;D
The starters you give away to friends that then go through nine days of feeding will be only be divided by four.
