OCTOBER - Buy Nothing New Month

This is something I only heard about this morning on the ABC Breakfast Show. Thought maybe someone was trying to tell me something after my post in the Shopping Thread . . .
For those interested, have a look at this sites . . . I'm in for giving it a go . . not sure I could do it for 12 months though. We'll see . . .any takers??

I could try a very abridged version maybe. Maybe not.

I'm thinking if I can put the money I would have spent on any said items in a jar . and see what it all adds up at the end of the month. The other day I spent $7.50 on a food magazine (must have been mad!! - won't do that again!! - I hope!!) - that would have been a good start

Yes GF I know what you mean. I could do something like that too. Maybe I could also sell a couple of things I no longer need and give some more away....

Retail traders are not going to be happy girls, you know how they scream when sales figures are down. Good luck to those who are going to try it, it can't be hard for a month unless there's a birthday present you need to buy.

Magazines certainly are expensive G.F. Does your library have them online? I get loads of magazines online at the library, it's not quite the same but I've found it ok.
I have my friends birthday coming up in 2 weeks - I can always make a basket (of which I have several) of homemade goodies.

I'm trying to cut down on waste....and trying to only buy things that we will genuinely use. I'm turning our disused and unloved 1/2 court tennis court which takes up a lot of the backyard (it came with the house!) into a garden with raised garden beds. I'm hoping that within 12 months I will be getting most of our vegetables out of there. I'm so sick of buying produce from Coles and Woolworths and throwing things out a few days later when they are rotten. I want to be able to go out and just pick what we need for the day......although I may have to stop nibbling as I wander around watering....I've made considerable inroads into the blueberries, strawberries and tomatoes lately...oops

Stacelee, jolly good idea. It is great to be able to pick fresh veggies from the garden. Saves a fortune and so much better for you.
Glad I have only just read this as I have been shopping like there are no tomorrow's. ( while Ral in hospital). I bought a cast iron cooking pot for 1/2 price, a couple of bread tins, several tops to wear and a visit to that interesting shop, Essential Ingredient, where I bought several NON Essential ingredients, such as red rice and coconut sugar. Good reason to stop.
Thanks Goldfish, good idea.

I have no problems with no clothes or cooking appliances etc. not sure I could go without the fresh produce though. In face now I no longer work I don't buy too many clothes etc. only when I am in Singapore.
Since being retired and on a fixed income I do think several times about my purchases.

Like the $100 food challenge I like things like this to get me thinking about how it can do things better & save money, so will definitely question myself this month on what I'm buying 😄
