An aga and a rayburn are pretty much the same thing.

Yep:  just a brand.  Both are slow combustion stove, meaning they only work if you fill them up with wood (thing of the past for many people).
Some are linked to a hot water tank to heat the water used in the house (ours is, but we also have solar panels - for summer- and an electric back up).  Great stoves to cook on if you have the wood supply, according to me anyway  :)

Some Aga's are oil-fired too as well as gas and now electric, at least here in the U.S.

You're right, Andie, they are not all wood fired any more but I only have experience with the good old solid fuel ones.

Sorry, I just had to show you all my temporary excitement having two machines.  I will be returning mine today so I will have one as of lunchtime. I just wanted to be like Hyacinth Bucket for a day and have two.  The stupid bowl issue is not resolved.

Hyacinth Bucket has me in fits.

I can't keep up with these posts. Each day there are 3 more pages to read on this topic. I love seeing the kitchens.
Cuilidh I love the my centre bench too.

Oh no Lee! :(   Hope it's sorted soon!  :(

I'm still trying to find space for the second TMX in my tiny kitchen!!  On the plus side, we already know who's head chef... it's me and noone argues on that...  :o ;)  :D :D :D

Our Aga luckily is gas-fired and it also heats our hot water - some Agas can run the central heating system too but ours is not configured to do that.   Agas originated in Sweden and are seen by some to be a status symbol - ours was in the house when we bought it.

Joanna Trollope is a British author who was dubbed Queen of the Aga Saga - quote from British Council web site:
The Aga Saga is a term used (often disparagingly) to describe popular literature about people who live in middle-class, middle England, where the Aga, a particular make of cooking stove, is a characteristic feature

Some friends have a coal-fired Aga which has to be fed twice a day and also the ashes cleaned out - I guess there's a kind of symbiosis with feeding the Aga and the Aga feeding you  :D :D

I am head chef and I make it well known.  Poor Ed would have been happy sitting down and resting yesterday evening but I made him come into the kitchen and Thermomix with me.  One each.  Poor thing, I kept looking over his shoulder, offering friendly advice.  I am surprised he didn't tip the whole lot on my head.  He is such a patient fellow.  You'd have to me to live with me!  But he did enjoy the experience of having two machines,  I think we need to get onto Vorwerk and ask them to make an inbuilt machine for the kitchen.... What do you think?

Yes I only know them as wood stove or slow combustion stove. We had one for 2 years and had to put fire on every day to cook and have hot water thought I'd moved back 2 centuries but now am a little older (& wiser) would of appreciated it's worth and instead of totally pulling it out just had it as well as 'new' oven and hot water system. Could have used it in winter for hot water and cooking with no extra expense.  :-))

They are great in winter and keep the kitchen nice and cozy as well as heating the water and underfloor heating.  Up in the Outer Hebrides (where my family come from) nearly all the older houses have them and they are always the heart of the home, that's why I was so pleased, when we bought our home, that there was a rayburn.  Unfortuantely ours is fairly uncontrollable, great for soup, etc., but I wouldn't dare try to bake in it - I use the electric oven for that.  We also have solar hot water for summer - I would hate to be reliant on the rayburn for hot water during the mid summer!

Finally got around to taking photos of kitchen today. Have thoroughly enjoyed reading and viewing the lovely kitchens in this thread.  We renovated our home about 11 months ago now, and I am really happy with the layout of my kitchen, which is completely different to what it originally was.  My name is Kerry and I used Kezza because that is what my children call me.  They also call me Kezdawg, but I went with Kezza!!!
