Johnro, that's because your iPhone would have been searching for networks the whole time. I have that problem when I drive to Busselton and am out of 3G range for a while.

I'm looking at buying an iPad (again) and selling my MacBook (again) but am still uncertain about whether to get just the wi-fi or the wi-fi 3G. If I get the 3G, I'll cancel the contract I have with my iPhone as I won't need to use the internet on the iPhone.

BUT, can I update my iPhone apps through iTunes on the iPad? Can I charge my iPhone through my iPad? I'm searching for these answers online, but can't find any.  You guys who have them are way more helpful!

MJ I don't have an iPad (YET  ) but I am pretty sure they don't have USB connections - so you wouldn't be able to charge and update. Think this may perhaps be one of the reasons the girls said don't get rid of your macbook

Thanks faffa. I've been doing some more research and have spoken to a friend with a iPad. I can't connect iPhone to iPad except through bluetooth, but it doesn't matter as I have iTunes on my PC and can update the iPhone through that.

I'm planning to buy one now. I'm just going to check out covers first. I'll probably get the 32Gb wireless 3G and will organise a plan through BigPond. I think there's a $30 per month with about 10Gb. I'll cancel the plan on the iPhone as I won't need that any more.

Just bought it! Free delivery and engraving from Apple store, so I went with them. Got a Switch Easy case from techbuy.com,au.
Now will have to wait until it arrives to organise a plan. We're going away tomorrow, but back on weekend, then off away again, then back for an 80th! So hard to fit our holidays in!

So, at least I'll be able to pick it up when I'm home and take it back on holidays!

MJ be sure to go into a Telstra shop for the good advice remembering that the iPad is not a phone nor is it a computer. You may be wanting to use your phone more on the 3G network and your iPad more on the wifi network. I would think you would still need to have your iPhone on the 3G network.

In any case let us know and maybe I will buy an iPhone.  You can get the Telstra data plan for the iPad for $150 for 12 months with 12 GB.

I have three covers, one is the magnetic cover which protects the front which i use at home, one is  a cover for travelling which protects all the edges  and one which is very thin, protects the edges and means I can fit it I my handbag. The last is an  STM. All three make a stand.  All of them were around $40.

In addition to all the good advice from Gretchen, have a look at Berlin iPad case with a small typewriter. It looks fab. I would have bought it if I had seen it when I bought my case.

hally I went to get dragonvale for DS but as it requires internet and ours is so slow I decided against it. We love playing Smurfs, Snoopy, Diamond Dash, CavemanLand and Dream Park atm. All free and no internet required after downloading app.

Thanks for the advice Gretchen! My closest Telstra shop is 200km away, but I'm going to try to get there sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I rarely use the internet on my iPhone, that's why I think I'll can it. I don't want to have 3 plans - $80 p.m. for home, $10 p.m. for iPhone and another $20 or so per month for iPad!
That $150 plan looks excellent.

I looked at the Belkin one with the keyboard, but the reviews said it was too bulky. I may look at it later on once I've had my iPad for a while. I liked the look of the magnetic cover and could have got it from the Apple store, but I ended up with the Switch Easy one because it's also magnetic, but protects the back as well and doesn't make the whole thing too bulky.

Now, I'm going to have to buy a bigger handbag! I use a really small one that also acts as a purse because otherwise I find that my bag is so full of stuff it gets too heavy to cart around. I'll have to find one that's big enough for my iPad and my little bag.

Yup I get ya. I had to take  my iPad and my Kindle to a store to find the right backpack style handbag to fit them in. I never have my iPad out of my sight and is usually on my back leaving my hands free for the real shopping. If I want my iPad in the grocery store no problems. I have always had a backpack style bag. Not elegant or  stylish but imminently practical for a 65 year old. I  despair when I see women with bags over their shoulders and opened with their purses and phones  readily available or left in shopping trolleys  while they search up and down for stuff. Sometimes I might even mention it to them if I see a purse creeping out of an unzippered bag.  Ok some places are safer than others but I know my excess on insurance is not gunna cover my iPad. I value it so I look after it.

And ki have  to say that Cairns is not one of the safest cities I have lived in. Theft in this tourist town is rife.

If you get your iPhone on a plan for  $10 a month then you are  laughing.  Oh how I wish my old phone would DIE!. I would then buy an IPhone and have the sim card cut down to use I the iPhone. Like you I could then use it in my $10 plan with Telstra but mainly use the iPad for stuff as I rarely use or need the phone.  JB Hi Fi and others have a device that can take your old sim card and cut it to fit the iPhone therefore negating negotiations with Telstra re the very expensive plans. 

I put this idea to a Telstra guy and he said it could not be done but I know it can. I ain't buying one of the "plans".

I hear of some outrageously expensive phone plans that just about take my breath away. All I want is  a cheapie but I WOULD buy an iPhone outright on my $10 a month plan  just so I could sync it with my iPad.  I just love gadgets that work seamlessly.

Having said that I cannot justify getting rid of my rarely used phone for an iPhone..........YET!
