Vegemite Speghetti! Is she kidding??
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:49:09 pm »
I didn't know where to put this but you have got to see this recipe. It seems so bizarre I just had to try it and  my DH  fell in love not with Nigella but with the  dish.🍲🍲🍲🍲.

I used  Philly cream , cherry tomatoes  and it was moorish.

What a hoot. I can see kids loving this one and people tweaking it to death!

OMG  - I saw this one this morning, took one look at the name - and left!  Could NOT imagine anything worse!!  But then I read your post, Gretchen, and horror turned to . . . mmmmmmm, maybe! ;D ;D ;D

Can't guarantee that I'll ever get to try it but it just goes to show it's a bit of "you can't judge a recipe by its title!" ;D ;D

I am telling you goldfish that I loved it. DH said if he had not seen me put the Vegemite in he would not have known and that is true as I do use Vegemite in lots of stews casseroles and such like.

Funny thing is that the Philly cream seemed to mellow out the salty flavour of the Vegemite so I had to add a bit more Vegemite at the end.

What I really liked is that Helene made the Vegemite the star of the dish and not just a flavour added  thing . Whatever  is a Canadian doing thinking VEGEMITE.?  And Nigella too?  How did this happen that an Aussie didn't think this one first?  Or maybe someone had and was keeping it a secret.

Yes it is a crazy thing but it  works and I can see this as a great after school snack for kids . Something they can make themselves or reheat or even eat cold.  We are having it again on Thursday for breakfast with lamingtons. You gotta  love it!

Try it goldfish. You won't be disappointed or disgusted. It really works.

My vegan daughter in law is making this for her children as we speak replacing Philly cream with regular Philly. Apparently there is gelatin in the Philly cream. Live and learn eh?

Same here I really thought yuck that sounds discussing. But I guess we can say to much without trying it first. Bit like lettuce soup and green smoothies for me they don't sound very appealing but I have never tried either so can't say to much.

Couldn't agree more . Took me 2 years to try Vegemite when I first came to Australia over  45 years ago. I could not get past the smell but now I love it.  Give yourself a treat and make a small amount.  You could even melt some butter, Vegemite and sour cream, cream,Philly cream or cream cheese in the microwave and pour it over pasta or rice just to get the flavour of it. Too easy. If you find it disgusting then give it to the dog or cat or ME!

Ha ha  :D Very funny Gretchen and thanks for mentioning my blog  and recipe :-*

I just figured if it's good enough for Nigella, it's probably good for a few Aussies.  ;) Plus... well... I've always preferred salty foods over the sweets, so I was willing to be a guinea pig on this one.

I agree with Dede -- you never know until you try. One recipe where this is especially true is Kale Chips. They are amazing and yet, most people won't attempt them unless they've first tasted them somewhere. I can't blame people for this, as the recipe name just sounds so weird. The truth is that whenever I take Kale Chips to a party they are the absolute biggest hit of all that is on the table. People LOVE them and can't stop eating them. (Here they are all the rage in 100g bags at the health food shops for $7 per bag :o ) I think part of the appeal is that they take people by surprise and by enjoying Kale Chips we learn something new about ourselves. It makes us feel like we're 'growing' in some way and that's such a good feeling.

It was making the Kale chips that eventually led me to buy a dehydrator. At first I used the oven, then bought a cheap dehydrator at the op shop and then moved up to a full on Excalibur model so I can make larger batches more easily. All this is of course, because of Thermomix  :-*

But I digress so now I should probably include a link to the recipe after all this blabbing about Kale chips... in case anyone is interested, it's here:

Helene I reckon you could replace the soy or tamari sauce with vegemite and then you would have Aussie Kale Chips!

Thanks Gretchen, you've inspired me to try Vegemite Spaghetti. :)

I saw it on your blog today Helene and I had the words yuck, yuck going through my head. An inspirational idea for an Australia Day dinner! :D I think I'll announce to my family that we're having Vegemite spaghetti for dinner on 26th. I just hope they don't all find excuses to be elsewhere.

I looked at the recipe for Kale chips, hmmm interesting......

Oh yes Judy. I did try it and it was yummy. I used that Philly cream then put cherry tomatoes in at the end. They softened and added a bit of colour to it. The sauce turned out just right smooth and slightly salty but not too salty.I was thinking what yuk at first but had to do it and was very surprised and  you always have the ingredients in the house. I like fundj's idea of the ricotta.

Helene is an amazing person alright. What is she up to with a shop coming soon? What could it be?

Lol! That is the beauty of this recipe. Everyone has the ingredients so there is no excuse not to try it!  You could even use whatever cheese you have to make the sauce if you don't have sour cream, cream or Philly.

I think it is good fun even if you never eat it again!
