Apparently it was called wash day dessert because back before we had washing machines, it would take all day to wash the clothes. Maids used to make this dessert on those days because it was quick and easy.

That recipe is very similar. No nuts in mine but I love the idea of the nuts and the chocolate bits. Will make it like that next time. Should imagine it would be very popular!  DG is your recipe similar?

I've taken pity on the feral fairy and made banana choc chip muffins for breakfast....I'll post the recipe later if anyone wants it.  I know the nigella one is popular, this is the one I've used for about fifteen years and it's pretty reliable.  I've got bread rising but I stuffed the recipe up and put in too much water (didn't sleep again last night so I'm a bit tired)...a nice long rise and I'll cook it in my clay pot and it should be okay.  I'm going to make some cookies soon because the baby cow will be back and he likes cookies with his milk.

That threw me for a second Uni, I couldn't work out what nap sauce was.  Is the recipe on here somewhere? I love napolitana (sp?) sauce.  Tomato based sauces are my favourite with pasta....my daughter loves the creamy ones :(....I did make Alfredo for her the other day cos I was being nice.

Thanks Uni, might have a go at it for dinner.  I wonder how it would go freezing or bottling it.

Jude it looks the same. My recipe has stewed (or tinned) fruit on the bottom and a cake like batter on the top. Lovely with custard or ice cream in summer.
