chookie yes still love horses although i havent ridden in years...over here there is very little space so keepin a horse would have to be in stables etc plus plus plus so its just not worthwhile however i am wanting to introduce DD to horses in a couple of years...they only allow from age 6 here so she is too young at the moment ....i spent years around horses and also did competition etc..i love going riding...probably would have a sore bum though for a while though if i went riding again!!   Love the freedom of horses but you really need the space to fully enjoy them I think...over here they trotter around the town and here and there but there is no real space to really have fun  :)

ouch:  the horse-snake incident doesn't sound good.  Reptiles don't worry me...too much, but I can't stand spiders.  Luckily I'm in OZ  :-))

I had a similar horse-snake incident when I was ten - a snake spooked my horse while I was going through a gate and as I leaned over to hook the top gate latch, the snake startled the horse, he spun and I was flung off head first into the gate post.  It cracked my skull and tore my scalp but the reins dropped and the horse was well trained and stood until I came to.  I had to take my shirt off and wrap it around my head but in spite of being dizzy and having double vision was able to get back to the barn.  My grandpa and the farm vet found me, cleaned me up and the vet put my scalp back and tied the hair together to keep it in place rather than try to stitch it.
My grandpa took me to the hospital in Paducah, the nearest place that had an x-ray machine(45 miles from home) and I had to stay there for several days while they evaluated me.  My grandma slept in my room and did everything for me.
I really didn't remember what exactly had happened until some weeks afterward.  No one could understand how I could have been thrown because my nickname among the stableboys was "Lil Burdock" because I could stick on anything.  I hadn't fallen off a horse in years.
When my grandpa finally found out what happened he had all the trail gates changed so the latch could be operated by a rope pull on a tall post with a high pulley.  No more having to lean over to unlatch the gates and they had springs to close them automatically.
Visiting riders were always very impressed by these "modern" innovations.

NO snakes here.  Don't like spiders. Lots of those.  Frozzie,  do you still like horses?

Southern California doesn't have as many deadly spiders as OZ but we have our share of nasties.  Black and brown widows in abundance, brown recluse spiders, which are particularly bad.
There are a lot of tarantulas around my property but they are harmless - they only bite if one is stupid enough to meddle with them and a lot of the kids around here have them as pets.  They keep the population of bad bugs down so I don't bother them.  I think there are two or three varieties found in this area and they are all non-poisonous.  They avoid areas that are moist so mostly stay out of the garden.

andie in this case I was quite happy that this particular horse ran back home when I got hurt...as my family always knew where we went riding and it was an alarm for them to come and get us...i didnt walk all the way home just part of the way then dad came to pick me up...I only had two horses that stayed with me when i fell...one used to even nudge me to see if i would get up...i love how intelligent horses are and how they can limp and put on an act when they dont want to be ridden lol!

I'm glad my horse stayed with me.  I was in a field full of cows and they are so curious I could have been trampled if they came to see what I was doing but Kaz kept them away.  He was an Arabian and very smart.

What a fabulous kitchen, Chookie - Tarasis will be really, really jealous!

Yes , but he has lived in such interesting places.

Indeed :D though I think I'm jealous of most kitchens compared to our cubbyhole and certainly most/all the ones I've seen in this thread. Reminds me, I should take a photo of the stunning cupboard we have ... whoever thought it was a good idea needs their head examined.

As to the latter quote (I presumed that it was a comment from achookwoman by the formatting, though it was part of the quoted message from Cuilidh), certainly lived in lots of different places but I'm not sure I'd qualify them as interesting :) I do get about though and I suspect if we ever move again it will be to Northern Ireland (i.e back to my home country) and live in Bangor. Unless a job opportunity takes us elsewhere. (like my wife getting a job that brought us to Germany)

Wow, some stunning views and lovely kitchens! Whew, it's a big catch up every time I visit this thread.

Houses aren't a priority when you're farming, so ours is very basic. It's taken me years and years to get decent flooring, blinds, furniture etc. Still waiting for a new roof and to have decking put under our patio.
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Lovely kitchen Lellyj - hey, what's with the 2 Thermomixes.  Did we know you had 2 of them or is my memory really bad?

Ha, ha Judy!  You were quick, I thought my photos didn't work, so I deleted the post to try again, and you had already commented in that time!  I wanted to put up a few more pictures as I learned how to upload them from my mobile phone--still havent' replaced the lost camera!--and I only managed to put up old pictures of parts of my kitchen.  And the two thermomixes . . . I'm "babysitting" my mother's while she's on holidays!  I didn't want him to be lonely  :D And I have lots of cooking for the school fete to do.

What a great idea. I never think to borrow DD's when she goes away. You are doing well with your posting of photos.

Well JD, you wouldn't want your DD's thermomix to get lonely, your grandies love sleeping over at your house, don't they?!  I'm sure thermy would love it too! And yes CC, I did put a little spirit texta dot on Clancy in inconspicuous places, just thought it was a good idea not to mix them up.  I use my machine a lot more than mum does, so mine is likely to show wear and tear first and I would hate to giver her back the wrong one.

Meant to say before how lovely it's been reading everyone's stories and seeing the pics on this thread, although I haven't kept up iwth it since school has gone back.
