Oh you poor thing Gert, I would hate that. Guess you have tried everything known to man to combat this state of affairs and it all ends up being a waste of money.

I have tried and tried. Pots, in the ground  in the house in the sun, in the shade. Nothing works for me. The rats, mice, dogs , cockatoos, giant grasshoppers and others. I have tried cheap and expensive plants. I have used gardeners , landscapers and interested Amateurs. I cannot even grow parsley. It is too wet, too dry too hot or too cold. I have spent hundreds of dollars on herbs in the past 10 years. Now I have given up. I buy the potted herbs from Coles and  Woolies and Bunnings use what  I need, plantthe rest and watch them being eaten or just die. I had some luck with chillies for  a time but the rats ate them.

Once when I had a chef staying with us  I went to Bunnings and bought about $100 worth or herbs, planted them and unashamedly told them it was my very own herb garden. Thank goodness they lasted about two weeks.

Gert, I have a nifty tupperware herb planter which is self watering & perfect size for the supermarket potted herbs. I've kept a pot of basil going for a couple of months in one of these on the window sill. Sometimes I don't even bother taking the plant out of the pot from the supermarket, just dump it in the planter.

Gert I have a non TM recipe for black bean brownies.  There is no flour the beans replace the flour.  I have not converted the recipe yet but if you are interested I will post it in the non TM recipe section.

Gert,  I also bought a bag of those Black Turtles Beans but can't remember what they are for.  Was it a south African recipe?
The one thing we can grow is herbs.  The bugs  and Kangaroos don't eat them.  I throw handfuls into  everything..

Gert, I should imagine you do have to soak these beans and that they contain (as one book I read so interestingly put it) "unusual saccharides".  To avoid that, rinse really, really well and soak really, really well then rinse well again and, when you are cooking them, I am told that putting a piece of kombu (sea weed) in with them helps to reduce the farts as well.

Dennis thanks for the offer  but I don't care much for sweets.  Others might like to try them though. The only time I ever make a sweet would have to be a major birthday. I suppose now DH just had his 83 every one will be "major" though his mother lived until 104.

I have decided to try a goulash type soupy thingy with some beef bits I cut off a whole  King Island beef porterhouse strip . Should be ok and if I don't like it  the dogs will.  It is rainy here and dark but the overall feeling is winter even though the temp must be about 25 at 0630.

I've never managed to conque crepe making - I keep promising myself to try, try, try again, but have never got around to it.  Now that DH is lactose intolerant probably will never try now, although I guess soy milk will work just as well - must pop over to QJ's blog and check out over there to see if she has any answers.

Well thank you for that. I will hop out of bed and get them soaking. Good idea about the sea weed .I'll let you know my fart rating tomorrow.

Haven't tried that, Fundj.  What are the brands / makes / labels?  I think he was just so dis-spirited with his health before he went lactose free and realised that that was causing him his troubles that anything that even hints at lactose makes him wary.  If I know what to look for I might see if he's willing to give it a try.

Cuilidh, we just buy Harvey Fresh lactose free milk. It comes in bright red 1 litre cartons, and they have a little screw top lid on one side of the top.
